What one thing will motivate you to buy a new camera?
1

There are LOTS of reasons we buy new cameras, but since these polls only permit one answer, please select the single thing that will most motivate you to upgrade or to buy your next camera.

It might be interesting to see what the camera enthusiasts who use this website might want.

Naturally, if I haven't listed the thing you want next, then select "something else" and explain what you want in your reply.

Thanks!

You forgot, 'because my old one stopped working or broke'.

That's my reason.

I checked the "better AF..." option, even though technically the camera that I want already exists - the 5D III. I just cannot afford it right now - should I have checked the "bargain" option istead?

That being said, I have now decided to wait for the 5D IV - that should fulfil both criteria and (so I hope) more!

And... it is probably the BEST reason of all.

I knew I would forget something important.

The way I see it, a very expensive camera can still be a bargain if it does everything you want and is cheaper than the alternatives are.

Cost is always relative to performance and needs.

Darn it, that's difficult!

I answered "Better AF speed, tracking, and accuracy. Faster burst mode. A camera that would do an better job at sports and action photography," but I really debated for a good long time.

I wanted to answer with "More resolution (more megapixels)." The 16MP Four Thirds sensor limits me a bit for large prints, but whenever I know there's a photograph I want to print very large, I shoot for a panorama. I wish to stay in the Micro Four Thirds system, as it works very well for me apart from this minor inconvenience, so once technology permits a sizable resolution increase (by at least 25%) without compromising dynamic range and roughly keeping the same noise levels at high ISOs as the current crop of 16MP Four Thirds sensors, I may consider upgrading.

That being said, I think focus tracking reliability is the weakest link of my OM-D E-M5, and many seem to agree. While I don't regularly shoot action, having a camera that can track a moving subject reliably is always a good trait. It would also help in my lazy days, when I just want to focus and recompose.

But that just isn't enough reasoning for me to dump my E-M5, at least while I'm still rounding out my lens kit and in need of a better computer (which would be even more important, if/when higher resolution Four Thirds sensors come).

Thanks for bringing out my GAS though. (Cynical, of course.) I believe that I've managed to restrain it for the time being.

I completely agree.

In fact, we seem to have almost the exact same gear list!

I think my EM5 will be in my camera bag for many more years.

But then people would complain about the weight and switch back to the 70-200mm f/4 IS.

Re: What one thing will motivate you to buy a new camera?

My Nikon D3200 serves me well for nearly 2 years until one day I missed some better osprey shots.

I got these instead

http://www.flickr.com/photos/35513150@N00/9753245441/in/set-72157629659569728/

Act out of angry of D3200's only 9 AF focal points, I bought D7100.

Guess what? The osprey has not returned to the pond!

Instead the camera's new feature (time lapse) make me capture this:

Yfan... those two shots, your video clip, and by just glancing at your photostream shows me that you are an extremely talented photographer.

Once again proving... "it's not the camera, it's the photographer."

Thank you, Marty, for your encouraging words.

After 2 years, I find that my photo's quality are stagnated. I am struggling to improve to next level. The main area to improve is the art element, not image sharpness.

I put 'something else' as , having recently upgraded from the *istD to the K-3 for  a number of reasons , the only thing that will prompt another upgrade will be when they release a 35mm FF DSLR I can use my existing 35mm K mount lenses with

Those days are ending!

The days where image quality would significantly improve, or where one feature would make someone upgrade are gone. Camera makers are blaming everything except the possibility that the camera sales were inflated because there was a marked improvement.

Having used digital cameras since 1989 I've seen a lot of improvement, but the last camera I bought was the one to say I'm going to stop buying for a while because this camera is (almost) perfect. Anything new I tried since hasn't been a noticeable improvement.

OK, occasionally a manufacturer will invent a new feature that the market would go crazy for (like Olympus E-M5's Live Bulb mode), but how often does that happen?

Re: What one thing will motivate you to buy a new camera?

I haven't checked anything. I would have checked "Something smaller and lighter" because I love my D800E, but it is a tad on the heavy/bulky side. However, what I want is asmaller high quality SLR, so "Perhaps a pocket camera" does not apply.

I checked other.  For better JPEG color / AWB / lighting setting options.  I don't know if it exists though.

No single thing would motivate me to upgrade, as I did recently.

It takes a combination of important improvements plus the desire to buy a fine new toy.
