Olympus TG-3 - is it possible to replace lens cover if scratched?

I've just purchased a TG-3 which I love! an awesome camera. I was wondering as a rugged camera if the built in clear lens cover happens to get scratched, is it possible to have this replaced or is it permanent?

This build is the same as the TG-2 and TG-1 so I"m guessing someone out there has had experience with this.

I was really concerned about that lens when I got my TG-1, but it has held up very well. My TG-1 is going on 2 years old and has been dropped a few times and even sent back to Olympus for some trim bowing after a drop (they did a great job fixing it). I has no scratches on the lens. I do keep it in a case. I also finally bought it the Olympus leather jacket for it that has reduced the slipperiness of the camera body (reduces risk of drops) and also keeps things away from the lens a little more. I don't know if Olympus can replace it if it gets scratched, but I suspect they could (you could call customer service and ask).

I do not know if it is replaceable but the higher ring around it gives at least some protection.

If you want a lenscap, you could buy the Olympus CLA-T01 adapter. The adapter replaces the metal ring (with one made of plastic) and an additional lenscap that fits into the new plastic ring is part of the CLA-T01.

That's good to know, I'm very impressed with the camera but that just seemed a chink in it's armour. I see some small screws there so I'm sure that Olympus could replace if necessary but thought maybe could be a consumer replaceable part too. I wish they'd built the lens cover into the screw off front ring as this would make it very simple to replace but maybe that would have caused a waterproofing issue.

Re: Olympus TG-3 - is it possible to replace lens cover if scratched?

Hi guys,

Sorry to crash into this thread, but am I understanding this correctly: the TG-3 does NOT have a lens cover, neither built-in nor an external one?

I just downloaded the manual and tried to find something about that, but I didn't. But the camera itself certainly is tempting ...

I'd appreciate an answer; thanks a lot.

Cheers,

Kurt

The TG-3 does not have a classic lens cover. The front element of the optical system / lens is covered by a transparent part of the case. You can buy the Olympus CLA-T01 adapter which replaces the standard front ring and adds the possibility to use lens adapters or the supplied snap-on lens cover.

Here you can see the setup on a TG-2: http://www.hkepc.com/forum/viewthread.php?action=printable&tid=2042018

The same parts fit on the TG-3.

I just broke the glass in front of the lens. Olympus does not sell parts and the only option is to send it into them. $130 apparently, thats too expensive for such an easy fix! Anyone have a broken TG3 parts camera they want to sell me?

Hi I have the same problem, but mine is only 2 deep scratches, so ok until you zoom and then it wont focus, so thinking of removing old glass and replacing with a small clear glass filter from something else, otherwise it is an awesome camera, and mine is a TG2, and had it for years, and love how the battery lasts for ever, as it goes into standby mode when not using it.
