GM-1 and PL 15mm f/1.7 go Mountaineering in the Rockies
21

As promised, I took my brand new PL15mm f/1.7 out for a spin in the "real world" last weekend on my GM-1. Overall impressions?

  • Great color / contrast / detail rendering
  • Sharp enough for me! (I don't really pixel peep...)
  • Very much like my beloved Sony RX1 on the GM-1
  • MUCH better than trying to use that finicky little scroll wheel to adjust aperture!
  • Better IQ than the kit lens but at f/5.6 or f/8 is it worth the extra $$$? Not sure. For me, yes. I like the option of f/1.7 but others will feel limited with no zoom.
  • LOVE the 30mm FOV. I think this is my favorite prime FL of all time. It's the perfect compromise between 28mm and 35mm. Perfect for almost any landscape IMHO.

Here's some shots from the weekend. Some are with the el cheapo Olympus 40-150mm which I also carried. Many are stitched panoramas - the 30mm FL is perfect for this.

Story and background to the trip along with many more photos with the PL15 at my website as usual.

Thanks for looking!

I haven't been farther than Jasper.  Those are truly spectacular pictures and now I want to go further into Canada.

Depending where you're starting from, these mountains are much further south than Jasper is. This area is about 1.5 hours from Calgary.

I drive up from Glacier NP near Calgary through Bamff to Jasper.  An amazing drive.  Lots of wildlife (I photographed a mother Grizzly Bear and her two cubs (from a distance with my E30 and 70-300 lens).

Another great set!  The lens seems to have worked very well for you.  Looks like quite a 'hike'!

WOW! You have a lotof stunning landscapes on your site, Vern! Excellent eye, excellent technique, and much more courage than I have - some pics of those guys clinging to steep snowy slopes really freaked me out!

BTW, your list of previous gear is amazing too, with the A7 and the XT1 for instance...

Happy climbings!

Very nice indeed. Seems like a pleasant stroll. Haven't been in Calgary and the Rockies for too long.

Interesting to hear about the lens. How are you finding the 12-32mm?  It looks like the 15mm is something to buy in addition to the kit lens.

Thanks Jeanette. My list of previous gear is a bit embarrassing but I like tech gear so I guess I like to try it out a lot!

I love the 12-32 but it has some disadvantages on the GM1 such as adjusting the aperture by accident with the rear (finicky) scroll wheel and not as optically nice as the PL15. I also like flowers to the MFD on the 15mm is nice.

The 15mm is completely different than the 12-32 but both have their uses.

These are very impressive scenes. I especially like the shots with wide open vistas. Oddly, I found the next to last shot with the person in the foreground made the mountains seem smaller.

BHPhotoVideo. I paid full price but it was still cheaper than buying in Canada because for some reason their price was lower...

Mountains can really fool with perspective - there's at least a 1500 foot drop on either side of that ridge!

Re: GM-1 and PL 15mm f/1.7 go Mountaineering in the Rockies

Panasonic Canada jacks the price way up.  I bought my 20 f1.7 from B&H a couple of years ago for the same reason.  However, on the 20 Panasonic Canada will not honour the warranty so if I have a problem it has to go back to the US for repair.  B&H ships to the Canadian address from Canada.  Also the price delivered was almost 10% less total than quoted!

Re: The PL 15mm f/1.7 lens, are you really happy with it

I'm happy with it. Does it render special? I don't know. It renders nice and it has manual aperture, which on the GM1 is really handy. It's sharp, produces great color and doesn't flare...

I'm not as fussy as some, I just see a nice scene and try to capture it with whatever lens or camera I'm in the mood for that day!

Some stunning photography and countryside!  Reminds me that I need to get back into that recreation, again, it's been a long while!

Thanks for sharing and showing us what the 15mm, in good hands, can do.
