EVF installed on DP2m

Lao Wei, a friend of mine, has just finished this EVF for the Sigma DP series cameras. Right now, we have tested it on DP1, DP1s, DP1x, DP1m, DP2, DP2s, DP2x, DP2m, and DP3m.

DP2 Quattro will be tested later this week.

The EVF shows the video output from the USB of the camera. More than 20 units were sold now. Actually, it's a kind of DIY product. The myopia degree was set on demond before shipment, you have to reassemble it if you want adjust the myopia degree. I suggested him to add dioptric adjustment fuction in the next version. I wrote a blog for EVF. (Sorry it was written in Chinese.)

The price is about $100 for mainland China.

A lousy live signal, too. So I wonder how much better the view gets with this EVF (let's say in good sunny conditions ...).

Here is a video for the EVF.
1

This video was taken from the first prototype unit, and right now the quality of the screen has been improved a lot. We suggest that you setup the video output of the camera as PAL for almost 97% coverage of the picture.

It looks much like the orignal screen of DP1 with 320x240 pix mini screen.

what a pity, DP2q doesn't have video output, so there will be no EVF for quattro

I test DP2 quattro yesterday, it seems quattro give up al video function, even video output for TV reviewing the picture.

So, this EVF doesn't support quattro series.

I asked the Sigma guys, hope they have some good news. I mean the video output can be set by upgrading the firmware. Hope so.

That is a serious issue to me -- and very disappointing. I was looking forward to reviews of the DP2 Quattro with this EVF.

I hope so too.

Sorry for late reply. Can you use taobao.com to order the evf?

We've send several evfs to HongKong and Taiwan.

This EVF can be used on other cameras.

Maybe this version is the last 100 sets. New Logo MyView. A few improvements.

Nice! Very frustrating/annoying that the DP Quattro series can not support this or even just playing photos via video output to TV.

I tried to play around to see if I can get some 'tethering'/preview type thing working - and sadly when the Quattro recognises an usb lead plugged in, the screen flashes 'Now Connecting...' and the camera becomes 'in active' i.e. you can't take photos until the lead is unplugged...grrrr so frustrating.

I'm wondering whether the software/firmware can be update so you can at least continue using the camera. Then if the computer software (SPP) could be updated to load the photos as you take them - woooooaaarggghhhh Tethering

Something similar for external LCDs/viewers, EVFs etc. would be so useful.

If anyone is interested in tethering then at the moment I'm able to get some kind of tethering using a wifi card (ezShare) and my iPad with ShutterSnitch - it's a bit slow but workable.

Re: a real EVF for Sigma DP series

Is it possible to hook the USB output to an external monitor rather than an eyelevel EVF (eg a tablet or an ipad, say)?

When using a DP on a tripod it could be useful to be able to see a nice big view of the scene..

The Quattro becomes inactive when the usb lead is plugged in, I haven't tested the Merrill however.

Re: a real EVF for Sigma DP series

I have a DP2M, cables, an android tablet and android phone, both of which have usb sockets but I don't know how, if it is possible, to make them talk to one another.

My G6 can provide a live view and remote control to my tablet via wifi which looks promising but the live image it provides only uses half the tablet screen so is barely bigger than camera LCD - which limits it usefulness for that View camera viewfinder experience.   If the DP2M can provide a full screen live feed to a tablet via cable that would be helpful for landscape composition.

Re: a real EVF for Sigma DP series

Hi,

well, don´t get me wrong: i have been following this thread for a while .. and i am still wondering: what´s the point in this evf?

No doubt, it´s great if guys are thinking of sulutions for various problems - and even greater if they manage to come up with something usable and helpful.

I do understand the advantages of an evf to lcd. Both i have on my aged Fuji S9100 and hardly ever use lcd .. only if the possibility of tilting it gives an advantage.

The evf introduced here has a resolution of 320x240 which is worse than DP2 lcd, isn´t it?

To my taste it´s not really quickly attached and hardly can be left on the camera.

Of course, i have problems with DP2-lcd too: small, poor resolution, difficult to see in bright light conditions.

But You know how i helped myself out? I got a "display-loupe", an addon for the screen, that You can leave there or just connect/disconnect it by clicking it to an attached plastic frame. (About same thing is available for DP m or q, i´m not quite sure). It´s damn light (perhaps 50g), can be "folded" together, can be on a string around the neck. Of course there is no light from outside confusing view and it enlarges the screen to a point, where You slightly start to see the pixels .. but it´s still perfectly fine!

Another plus: because of the different way of being able to hold the camera it´s a more stable position than with Your arms straight out ...

This is, how it looks on my DP2:

It´s a 2,7"-version, which is hard to get these days, but fits PERFECTLY to the 2,5"-screen of DP2.

As it was the only item i could find in this size, and was pretty cheep (about € 30,-) too, i decided for "Dörr Digifinder plus".

I am in no way related to this company or do i want to do any advertisment for it. It´s just an EXAMPLE, and perhaps the 3"-sizes from other companies fit too - i haven´t tried it.

I have found a video on youtube about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4FHtO8ALzc&html5=1

Maybe i am wrong and i didn´t understand the whole story to see the benefit of the evf introduced here. If so, i will be glad to be corrected and informed ..

But to my eye lcd with this attachment becomes "kind of" evf ..

Manfred

(sorry for my sometimes perhaps "strange" phrases .. but english isn´t my mother tongue)

"babha" is actually a combination of"BAtuk BHAgwan", a kind of nickname given to me by a group of elder pilgrims during our pilgrimage to the holiest places (according to hindus) in India 1991: meaning is about "divine rascal" .. btw "babha" aswell is often used to address white strangers
