Are you using original lens hoods?

Hi,

are you using original lens hoods or alternative ones? I'm thinking if getting one for my 50/1,4 and want to know, if the original one is better, or if you are paying only the Canon brand.

Thanks

Re: Are you using original lens hoods?

Hi

all my canon L lenses I use canon hoods only because they come with the lens but my 50.mm f1.8 / 18-55is & 55-250is all have cheap 3rd party hoods & I have no problem with them.

Re: Are you using original lens hoods?

I use after market [ cheap ebay ] ones in field .

Canon hoods have fuzzy stuff that collects dust and seeds and I lost a few in brush - you don't know till ready ro take shot and no hood .

The cheap ones break , don't fit as well / tight - warp easier and sometimes are a different color .

Re: Are you using original lens hoods?

I've had 1 third party lens and 3 Canon (OEM) hoods. The fog of the OEM hoods is better, the 3rd party wasn't bad, but it wasn't quite as precise. Also, Canon hoods have a felt lining which will absorb additional stray light.

My experience with 3rd party hoods is limited and while I see nothing wrong with them as an option (especially for the $ difference), I prefer the OEM hoods for their flawless fit and felt lining. In fact, just yesterday I ordered the OEM hood for my wife's 50/1.4.

Re: Are you using original lens hoods?

the only original hood i don't use is the canon 17-40 f4.0, i use the 24-105 f4.0 hood on it and it works quite alright but no after market hoods.

cheerz.

Re: Are you using original lens hoods?

Only if the lens comes with a hood, otherwise I've had good luck with cheap ones. I can't see spending $25+ for one from Canon when I can get one for $5 and it fits fine. Confucius says "shade is shade".

i've been using the Rubber collapseable Lens Hoods on my Lens for several years, They work as well as the Plastic or Metal Lens Hoods and take up less space in a Camera Bag. They are easy to clean also  The inexpensive Generic Brand appear to be well made and do the job.

Re: Are you using original lens hoods?

Different for all my lenses.

Canon:
24f2.8IS and 35f2IS I use canon clones from amazon.
24-105f4 I use the hood from a version 1 24f1.4L. It's narrower than the new one.
70-200f4 screw in straight tele hood, plastic. Again much narrower Than the huge canon version.
100macroL canon hood it comes with.

Sigma 50f1.4 last version. Screw in metal hood again because it's both deeper and narrower than the hood it came with.

Canon hoods are nothing to write home about.

Re: Are you using original lens hoods?

The only hood I have which isn't a Canon one is for the 50mm f1.4. I did have one which screwed into the filter thread but since the 50 is famed for its fragility, if it got a knock then the lens barrel would take the force and no doubt break the af drive.

I got a third party one from China which is a proper bayonet fit and that protects the lens properly and does a good job of shading the lens too. Overall, I'm happy with my choice and it's made of a very similar quality/feel plastic as the Canon ones I own.

Re: Are you using original lens hoods?

I have tried a few 3rd party hoods but now only use Canon. Here is why I don't like 3rd party hoods...

1) they don't fit as well (sometimes too tight, sometimes too loose)

2) they are made from cheaper, thinner plastic

3) they don't look as nice (unpainted black plastic)

4) they almost never have interior "flocking" or "fuzz"

I use these too - I just got a few in the sizes I use for filters (that I have step up rings for) and use them.  2 hoods > a dozen different ones

I've tried aftermarket lens hoods and always return to Canon's--even though they are overpriced which annoys the heck out of me. They are designed for specific lenses so they fit perfectly and provide maximum protection from impact and lens flare.

Some use black flocking which can pick up dust over time that needs to be periodically removed (I use Scotch Tape). But that black flocking is wonderful for killing extraneous reflections inside the hood to provide clean images.

Re: Are you using original lens hoods?

I have had the rubber hoods with both the plastic and metal mounting rings get stuck .

I only use them on my CPL's .
