A good lens made better with the addition of profiles.....
1
I was surprised to see no reviews of this lens, so here's my two bits...
for or many years I have been diddling around trying to find a decent 20/21mm, and this became more urgent when I bought the 1dsmk2 a few years back.. The 16-35 mk1 was not good, and quickly replaced with the 17-40 which was better (IMHO)... After a while my search continued and I aquired one of these... Which was ok but I still was keen for better... At the time the zeiss was not available in the canon mount, and was very expensive, so I replaced this with a Leitz 21.. Which was a very good lens... But of course manual focus only..
recently I upgraded to the 5dmk3's which have the lens profiles.... And aquired the very same lens I had previously owned....
and what a revelation this has been.... The mediocre preformance previously exhibited has been transformed to me... It's now become my favorite ultra wide, I still have the 17-40 which is a nice lens but suffers from CA, but this 20mm is now excellent... Far better than either my 17-40, or the previous Leitz... And of course it's AF.
so, if you have one of the newer cameras with the lens profiles, or can introduce them in PP, it does appear to me to make a big difference to this lenses utility and I would not hesitate to recomend it .
On it's own the lens is a decent preformer, well made, robust, certainly better than the 17-40 and 16-35 mk 1, But not as good as a Leitz 21 pm R 3cam or a zeiss.. But combine it with the appropriate lens profile and this lens is transformed Into probably the best option for a ultra wide for canon users...
given mine is a third hand one, a new one might be better still!
