Canon 10-18 efs on sony a6000, exceptional value and choice
13

this may possibly be the best value choice, if not the best over all option for a zoom for nex cameras.

got my canon efs 10-18 today. using with smart adapter on sony.

the combo is exceptional. very good sharpness. very nice image stabilization. Price 299

1/80, 16mm f8

10mm 1/100 sec

13mm f7.1

18mm f 7.1

and finally a ridiculous 0.6sec at 10mm, handheld

and 100% center crop

Re: Canon 10-18 efs on sony a6000, exceptional value and choice

I am interested in similar setup on my NEX-6 too.

Are you using Smart Adapter III?

How is the autofocus speed compared to native E mount lens?

Do you happen to try other EF-S STM lens like 18-55mm and 55-250mm?
Is the IS more effective than OSS?

Thank you

Sounds like a good choice if you have such an expensive adapter anyway and can live with the slow AF. Buying an used SEL1018 might be an alternative for those who don't, otherwise

I am using an ebay smart adapter.  they go for around 100 dollars.

I have not tried any other efs lenses, as I dont know any.  I purchased this specifically for nex, b/c there are no cheap native mount alternatives.  Additionally AF speed is not an issue to me in ultrawide.

As for AF speed, it does not compare.  it is much much slower.  I use the lens primarily in manual focus.  AF does work however.

Re: Canon 10-18 efs on sony a6000, exceptional value and choice

they go for 85-100 dollars for smart adapter on ebay.  with the brand new lens, it comes to under 400.

there are no used sel 10-18 on ebay right now.  On FM the sold prices range from 620-680.  I already owned the adapter of course.  Once used or bundled, the canon lens will probably go for around 250.

the sony 10-18 is a smaller setup with native mount, and f4 speed, so it has that going.

Thanks for posting this.  I was considering doing the same thing as this combo is half the price of the Sony 10-18.  Not quite as compact but still pretty reasonable by the looks of it.

I would imagine that it would be way slower on a6000 since there would be no PDAF used.  When you say much slower is it 3-4 seconds slow or just not instant slow.  I figured because of the stepper motor in this lens, AF might be a bit better on E-mount.

I do occasionally see E 10-18/4 for $650. That said, what are the max apertures by FL on the Canon?

Interesting. I think I may get this instead of each mount version. Since its cheaper and covers what I would need.

Thanks for the post! it's a great idea..

I don't know much about EF-S lenses or adapters- does this give the STM and IS features as if is was mounted on a native Canon body?

Re: which adapter?

Do you know whether the Yongnuo smart adapter works with STM lenses?

Re: $400 vs $650

My math is $100 for adapter, $299 lens vs $650 (can be had for that $ as EinsteinGhost said). Difference is $250. For that price you sacrifice AF (not even comparable), size and weight - both smaller and lighter on Sony. I can understand this choice for those who wants to save, but then again, if $250 is an issue then maybe it's not worth spending that much on it at all.

Looking at the data at photozone.de, it looks like the Canon is better in the corners than the Sony. It's not much heavier if you don't count the adapter.

I can see this being an interesting solution if you have a couple of Canon lenses. Maybe the 85 mm f2?

Thank you

You mean 384 new for canon combo vs 650 used for sony lens.  at the price difference, you loose a bit of light, and definitely much slower AF.  Lets call image quality a push, though at least on their native mounts, the canon has better resolution.  guessing just a 50 dollar drop in the used price of canon lens, you are now looking at 334, vs 650, which is just over half price.

not only is the Canon 10-18mm exceptional value, but also rather good on the a6000!

I have the larger older Canon 10-22 EF-s mounted onto my nex5r and it too is a great combo in terms if IQ

Re: Canon 10-18 efs on sony a6000, exceptional value and choice

I wonder if 10-18 Canon can be used on my 5dm3 similarly to how 10-22 could be used by simply removing the guard in the back of the lens and then be useful at certain focal length. If yes it will be no-brainer for me as I own 5dm3 and a6000 and already own metabones adapter. I rarely use uwa in general but to spend $299 to use one across brands I can pay, on the other hand to spend $700 for used 10-18 plus used 17-40 for Canon another $500 a little bit too much
