Re: FZ-1000 25-400mm equivalent f/2.8-4.0 Leica Lens

It looks like an interesting development, although the zoom is a bit on the short side for telephoto. I would need to see how it crops to the equivalent of 600mm or more before I would consider it. By the way, what does DFD stand for?

Rodger1943 - DFD

A new type of AF. It's new to me also. Here's an explanation another poster provided: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/panasonic-gh4/panasonic-gh4TECH.HTM

Thanks John. I did a search and found it stands for "depth of defocus" and sounds horribly complex, but seems to work exceptionally well, provided you use Panasonic lenses.

Markings on top of lens?

Can anybody figure out what the numbers on top of the lens are. To me they look like 22 and 11 which sound like f stops not focus distances.

I'm pretty sure it says 25-400 for the zoom range. The F-stops are F2.8 to F4 which is listed on the front of the lens.

If this is a 20MP sensor, wouldn't izoom give a 666mm EFL 12MP image using 0.6" of the sensor?

Not sure of the math, using 12/20=0.6 of the area may not translate to the diagonal.  If it does that would be 40% larger than the 1/2.3 sensor in my FZ200.

Looks like it says 25-400 to me too.  And that makes perfect sense as if its 9.1mm actual == 25mm EFL, then 146mm actual = 401mm.  (25/9.1*146=401.1)
Rounding at either end makes 25-400mm EFL the proper spec.

Hope that the weight is reasonable

The specifications look just like what I am looking for in an all-around camera. Of course, besides a reasonable price (addressed by others), I hope that the weight of the camera would not be more than 24 oz or so (the Sony RX10 is too pricy and heavy for me). Personally, I would trade a little bit of extra zoom for an easier to carry package.

Thanks Tim, yes I see that now. It doesn't  show up too clearly on the iPad.

Sounds like a nice camera but I don't think it is in my budget, at least the budget that the other half sees. I got the FZ200 when it first came out and the ZS30 more recently. Now what more can I put on ebay.

If this true, they must think they have a pretty good camera because its a month earlier then the usual FZ annoucement

The usual rules no longer apply given today's quickly changing landscape. Everyone is experimenting in an effort to carve out a viable niche.

Exciting times I think, even if they are a little tainted by the inevitable demise of certain product lines (and perhaps even some camera divisions).

Marketing Stills and video should help.

This was unexpected, however I'd prefer to see Panasonic take a less video-centric attitude in their camera offerings. It's like still photography is really taking a back seat to video.

Agreed. I never use the video.

I dont use video either, but marketing this to both photographers, videographers, and hybrid guys helps me get a camera like this I am cool with that!

Be aware of some interesting numbers:

That was my point exactly. The landscape is changing, so it's not exactly business as usual. Past trends can no longer be relied on to predict future product releases/cycles.
