WiFi feature: Copying from camera to phone

Hey guys,

Got my new NX 300 two days ago and I've been testing things out. Not sure if other Samsung NX cameras have this feature but it would be awesome if they did, and if any of you could help me double check this.

One of the things that I haven't been able to fully test was the feature of being able to link the camera and my phone (iPhone), and sending the picture from the camera -> phone album.

Would anyone know if this sends the fully sized 20MP photo or a smaller compressed version? I was able to try it once this morning before leaving for work and it was only a small resolution (even smaller than a photo taken from the phone's default camera). Not sure if I made a mistake somewhere or if this is typical behavior. How can I make it send the full 20MP copy?

Edit:

My bad, the above crossed out paragraph is actually from the phone-as-a-remote feature. I've run into a bigger problem: whenever I try to send a JPG from the camera->phone, the app on my phone crashes. Ridiculous. Anyone know what's wrong?

Thank you so much!

I don't have the same camera but the wifi feature on my NX20 works with no issues, however I am also using a Samsung S4 phone and Galaxy Tablet so perhaps it is only compatible with Android devices??

I use  "Mobile Link".   It works very well.  Copies the pictures into my phone (or tablet) to the "Gallery" in a file called Mobile link - they are normal size.  I also use the Remote Viewfinder app on my phone which allows me to see the images from my camera on my phone or tablet and capture the pictures wirelessly.  I take pics of the hummingbirds at the feeder from inside my house with my camera and tripod outside so I don't spook the birds.

I was referring to the Smartphone - download the MobileLink App (free) to your phone or tablet. The Mobilelink is already installed on the camera.

Re: WiFi feature: Copying from camera to phone

well, there you should use the Smart Camera app instead being on NX300/NX30 autoswitching to the task requested there

Those dedicated smartphone apps had been replaced for the newer NX by a single Smart Camera App only

Rather odd because the manual and the app description in the iTunes Store describes it as fully compatible for iOS.

Re: WiFi feature: Copying from camera to phone

Yep, I use the Samsung smart camera app as seen here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/samsung-smart-camera-app/id592062781?mt=8

Edit:

To be specific, this is what happens:

  1. Put the camera on 'WiFi'
  2. Select "Mobile Link"
  3. Connect phone to camera wifi
  4. Open Samsung Smart Camera App
  5. Wait for them to link
  6. Select a JPG from the camera and hit send
  7. Camera screen changes to the "sending file" screen, while simultaneously, the phone app crashes
  8. After maybe 15s, the camera screen changes to "closing" then it goes back to the 'WiFi' screen

The "Remote Viewfinder" feature works just fine. I can use my phone to connect and take pictures. It can also save a copy of the photo in both the camera and the phone (although the phone version is a LOT smaller than photos taken by the phone's camera, as I mentioned in the OP). The timer also doesn't work.

Edit:

Just tested using a co-worker's Android phone. Photo was sent successfully Is this an iOS problem? The NX300 manual from the Samsung website includes instructions for iOS so I'm assuming that they are supposed to work. Pages 129-130:http://imgur.com/a/idGC7#0

Re: WiFi feature: Copying from camera to phone

yupp, that is exactly tight process (as I wanted to just check thatyou do not use any of those older dedicated apps which on google play still hang around)

In that case I would assume that the iOS connection might not be stable enough. For Android there had been some issues noted on 4.3.x and higher which can be corrected on WiFi/Comms settings but I cannot tell you if that is happening as well on iOS.. basically the Phone identifies the connection as weak and and swaps to 3G

Re: WiFi feature: Copying from camera to phone

I think I read where the Samsung app requires NFC capability on the smart phone.  Apple does not current support this capability.  Rumored to be in iPhone 6 but who knows...I did try it on my Nx300 and iPhone and got a wifi connection but could never get to the screen on the camera to select photos to send to phone..

Re: WiFi feature: Copying from camera to phone

it does not need NFC but you can connect manially... NFC is just a quick way to establish the link.

The issue seems to be the stability of the WiFi connection (had that with the AutoBack to my PC as well)

Thanks for the clarification, I wondered why it connected but would go no further.

Re: WiFi feature: Copying from camera to phone

Damn, so you think it's a problem with iOS? I hope this would be fixed with the upcoming iOS 8 (which I'm double hoping would be a free update because I'm not buying a new phone just for this haha).

Just clarifying that it's a phone problem and my camera is fine -- otherwise I'll only have another 2 days to have it exchanged for a new unit.

Re: WiFi feature: Copying from camera to phone

Thanks for sharing! Good to know I'm not the only one experiencing this -- so I guess this points to either an issue with compatibility as opposed to something broken with the devices.

not really...

One thing that I noticed with some S3LTE/S4 on latest Android patch is that they automatically swap from Wifi connection to a 4G or 3+G when the OS thinks that this link could be faster for streaming data hence it connects to the WiFi but as soon as the amount of data is getting large (and some technically issues with the Wifi Link might come into play e.g. unstable or low throuput connection) it drops it and wants to use 4G or HSDPA

I do not know enought about iOS though so one think you might want to try out is disable the data option over your 3G connect so that WiFi is enforced.

If the behavior does not change (menas it still disconnects on data rtansmission) it might indicate some compatibility issue. If it does, well Android does allow to prevent to autoswitch off of WiFi to 3G so there might be something similar within iOS

Does seem like a compatibility issue. I just tested with the cellular off and the app still crashes on hitting "send". I'll run by the shop later and ask if this is something they might know anything about (I wish they told me if they knew).

Thanks for the patience and insights tjobbe!

Edit:

Haven't gone to the shop yet BUT I tried the "Autoshare" feature (different from the Direct Link) and it works (??). Using that feature, my iPhone can receive every photo taken by the camera in full 20 MP size. So it's quite odd that the Direct Link version doesn't work at all.

While I'm happy this work, and could mean that the Direct Link could work in the future, I don't think I'll be using the Autoshare feature any time soon (at least until I get my hands on spare batteries to lug around) as I suspect the battery drain will be terrible for both of my devices. Not to mention that the Autoshare requires the app to stay permanently open on the iPhone as even minimizing it will cause the connection to shut down.

Edit:

The last paragraph of the review on this page  supports my findings

Re: WiFi feature: Copying from camera to phone

if I am not mistaken, that is based on using DLNA hence a different transmission protocol (which as well indicates that the iOS app on the file load seesm to have some techncial IP protocol issues)

What you can do with the DLNA is uploading to a Cloud app or any device that is rgistered within link.samsung.com

The DLNA doesnot support RAW different to the autoback up funktion.

I think there is a post in this forum that describes e.g. how to access even drop box directly from the NX300 via the DLNA link

Re: WiFi feature: Copying from camera to phone

Alex, I guess this post here by ttbek is describing the use of what on NX300 is called ALLSHARE (now Samsung link)

http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/53255998

I did a how to on a german forum for  that setup and I can confirm that works fine, you can select either the cloud service registered in LINK or a PC/device

Re: WiFi feature: Copying from camera to phone

Very, very interesting. Not sure if I can use this on the go (my original intention was to send photos from the camera to the phone, so I can upload it to my site) but this did show me several options I might be able to take. I will, however, see if that can work with my iPhone. If not, at the very least I have that option open.

Thank you so very much!

If I get anything working, I'll update it here.
