350D Replacement?

350D Replacement?

I currently have a Canon 350D which is over 8 years old now and thinking of replacing/upgrading it.

Can anyone give any recommendations of what would be a good replacement?

I would like to have the option of HD video, although by the looks of it most "current" models seem to have this now-a-days.

I only have two lenses currently, the 18-55mm kit lens and a 70-300mm IS lens , so would like to be able to continue using these on my next camera. Also thinking of getting some extension tubes to have a play with some macro stuff.

I'm no pro so have no real requirements as such. Budget wise, well, I don't mind spending a bit for something worthwhile but not looking to spend thousands as I'm only an amateur

Thanks for any advice.

The 70-300 IS is a decent lens, but Canon has updated the 18-55 quite a bit over the past 8 years.  The 18-55 IS STM would be a good upgrade of your lens too and is designed for better use in video focusing.

Canon made some significant improvements to the Autofocus starting with the T4i (I can attest to that).  An 18-135 STM on a recent body would do very well.

I would say to wait a couple of months for the 750D.

Re: 350D Replacement?

I was in the same position a few months ago. I now have the 700D, and am very pleased I upgraded.

For me, it was important to work with existing lenses, specifically my Sigma 10-20, so the 700D was a good choice. I've not really made use of the video capability, but love the auto ISO, increased display size and off show flash triggering for my Speedlite.

As has already been said, the new 18-55 kit lens is a big improvement with the STM focussing and IS.

If that's the route you go down, do shop around. For me, PC World worked out best - they did a kit that had the camera, 18-55 lens and an extra battery and cleaning cloth.

I'd get a T4i or a T5i with the 18-135mm as a kit.

Any of the current models will be an astounding improvement over your trusty 350D.  Pick one and put the rest of your money into high quality lenses.

Re: 350D Replacement?

I gather the t5i is the american model of our 700D here in the uk.

Would the extra cost (a good £200 - £300 more) for the 70D model be worth considering too???

If I can answer your question too, the answer is yes.  The Canon 70D is worth the extra cost...just check the reviews.  For a quick summary look at snapsort...Canon 70D vs Canon 700D...just ignore their comment about no (body) image stabilization as the image stabilization can be found with the lenses.  Canon's naming convention is such that the T5i and 700D are the same model.

Only you can answer that.  Are there features or capabilities in the newer model that you need to think you might need?  If so, and you can afford it, go for it.

Re: 350D Replacement?

I am in the same situation. I am looking to replace my 350D and I am debating in getting the SL1 or the T5i with the Kit lens or the body only and get the Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM | C

Or....

Why not look at a mirrowless or 4/3 camera?  Most are adaptable to any system lenses. Panasonic has some good ones, you can use your lenses and have a smaller camera.  My 2 cents.

Re: 350D Replacement?

When the 600d arrived on the market about 3 years ago I replaced my trusty 350d which I gave to my daughter. While I appreciated the extra features of the 600d it is heavier larger and clumsier than the 350d. The 100d might feel better in your hands. Only you can say.

That doesn't seem too bad a deal considering it looks like the lens alone is over £300.  I'm not sure about investing in an older model though??

They also do the same lens on a 700D for £729 (not on offer).  How does the 700D compare to the 60D??

See Should I get a 60D, 70D, or 7D instead of a Rebel?  in the unofficial Rebel Talk FAQ.

Re: Or....

I recently got back into photography after giving my granddaughter my trusty 350D. I bought the 700D with the 18-135 STM and have never looked back. A great combo in my opinion.
