do I have a defective E-PM2?

Just received my "bargain" e-pm2 a couple of days ago. I've shot a few hundred frames with it, and I've gotten a bunch of these kinds of RAW files. Has anyone else seen this kind of behavior?

Same image from RAW+JPG files

The RAW file:

and now the JPG:

The card was formated within camera before taking the images.

Re: do I have a defective E-PM2?

I've never seen anything quite like that.  Have you tried a totally different card?

Different cards, and different lens. It doesn't happen every time, but I'd say out of the initial 300 frames I've shot with it, I've seen more than 15.

Wow!

This ain't good.

On the bright side, I got very fast warranty service on my PM2. I mailed it in on a Thursday and had it back the next Friday.

Re: do I have a defective E-PM2?

Do a few more tests, interesting (and I see, frustrating).
.

I very much doubt it is the cam.
.
As I understand it, JPGs are processed from the in-camera RAW (applying colour balance, sharpening exposure comp etc.) even when you don't keep the RAW.  I think that most (if not all) cams work that way? IE there's a RAW processor of sorts built into each cam ..
.
Can anyone confirm (or refute) that belief - with any authenticity?
.

Try, (say) After Shot Pro from Corel - it is free to test) as an alternative developer.

If it persists, email the images to oly and take the cam back to the retailer them to a cheap card and send it back ..

Odd that people complain a lens is not sharp enough,

Intriguing ..
Changing/fixing the cam made a difference?
What was it, software?

Re: do I have a defective E-PM2?

I use lightroom, and these images are exported from lightroom to a smaller JPG file that I've uploaded.

So far, my understanding is this behavior is NOT normal ?

My problem was not the same as the OP's. I was just relating that the warranty service was very fast.

Re: do I have a defective E-PM2?

I've taken thousands of shots with my E-PM2 and I've never seen anything like that. Does it show up when you are using the camera to view the raw files?

Re: do I have a defective E-PM2?

It displays fine on the camera. I assume it maybe using the JPG file to display.

How do you transfer the images to the computer?

It could be the card reader.  If you transfer the same defective images to the computer several times does it come out looking identical?  Also, if you use a USB hub, try connecting directly to a usb port on the computer.

Re: How do you transfer the images to the computer?

I use my MBP retina's built-in SD card reader.

Importing to lightroom, I normally convert RAWs to DNG during import. In this case, either the DNG or ORF files behave similarly, and both have/display the odd artifacts.

Try firmware update and camera reset

Update to the latest firmware, and try using the option to reset the camera to the factory settings.

Probably a longshot, but that's easier than mailing the camera somewhere, so it's worth a try.

Two of E-PL5 with same sensor and internals and I always shoot RAW+jpeg and never seen anything like that in 2 years.

Step 1. Put the suspicious RAW file back on a clean card and then use the in-camera RAW edit to see if all OK - should give a result same as the original camera jpeg.

Step 2. Use Olympus Viewer 3 to do a RAW conversion of that suspicious file, if still weird then there is a problem to report to Olympus, because that's probably the first thing they will say to try.

Step 3. Try Corel AfterShot Pro (30 days free) or Silkypix V6 (30 days free) and see if still weird.

Step 4. Now back to my concreting job.......

Regards...... Guy

Re: do I have a defective E-PM2?

thanks. I'm gonna update the firmware and see what happens. I won't try other RAW converters, since they are not part of my workflow. If the RAW's are having issues with Lightroom, then the camera will be going back... ;-(

Guy...

I must thank you for the wonderful website you've created, and I tried to read most of it before the camera arrived.

My main question after using the camera for a couple of days is... How to deal with Shutter-Shock on these small bodies?

Turn on 1/8 sec anti-shock, and turn off IBIS.  I had very good results with my EPM2 with that combo.

Thanks. So far I've tested the e-pm2 against my old GF1, and there is not much improvement ;-( Out of several hundred images taken of the same subjects with the same lenses (20/45/14-140), I see not much of Resolution improvement... I suspect mostly due to shutter-shock. (FW 1.0 with IS turned on).

I just updated the FW, and I will turn the IS off, and redo these tests. I hope to see better results.
