It has been an interesting ride, but my Samsung NX days are over...
1

After selling my Canon gear and buying a NX200 a few years ago, and then moving on to a NX20, I have decided to move on.

I love the NX system, but in end, the low light auto focus performance on the NX20, together with the fact that it is impossible to film any video without lens noise has made me throw in the towel.

I know the NX30 seems to have improved the focusing with the addition of phase detection, but given the fact I can buy a Canon 100d for about half the cost, it being almost as small, and have silent STM video focusing, means I will give it a miss.

I have listed all my gear on the for sale forum:

http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3673518

There is some good stuff in there, including a SEF20A flash, 20mm prime, 50-200mm OIS II and of course, the NX20.

You need to buy proper lens for silent recording

And here you have STM lens for silent recording.

Still, I cannot believe that contrast detection AF is any good compared to mirrorless. And cotrast AF is used in recording.

I tried several lenses. All either had intrusive motor noise or a high pitched whining noise caused by the OIS - which you want on when recording video. There is no ext mic socket either, to try and reduce this.

I have absolutely no noise with 18-200 or 45mm. Actually there is no noise with short and long stabilised kits, at least not in my case.

Not sure if I understand what you mean here.

STM is a marketing term which means stepper motor, all Samsung lenses are either stepper motor or linear motor (voice coil, works like MagLev train, called voice coil since it is similar to a speaker driver), with the exception of the 60mm and 85mm which are ultra-sonic motors (these aren't going to be for video).

Canon just happens to use STM motors which are quieter, but slower focusing.

The 18-200mm is designed for video, with a voice coil motor it should be silent. I haven't tried it for video. The resolution is a bit low for stills (but this is a non issue for video), but the voice coil motor focus nearly instantly for stills.

The quiet Samsung lenses are the 12-24mm (no OIS), maybe 18-55mm OIS, 45mm f/1.8 (no OIS), 18-200mm OIS. I bet the new 16-50mm OIS Power Zoom is targeted to video as well.

The 20-50mm, 20mm, are probably going to be two of the worst lenses for video.

Sony probably has the best setup for video, not sure what level you are trying to do. Family shooting or something and the Samsung is probably fine. There is a user on here Leon, who wasn't that happy with the quality of the video from Samsung, but it really depends on what level you are shooting video.

Interesting post. I did semi serious videos for a Toastmaster speaking club and much more critical work in their competitions using an NX20 on a video tripod with the 18-55 and sometimes the 30mm. There was some noise, mostly low level focus mechanical noise and a low frequency hum from the camera. This was easily removed in Pinnacle software. The results were very good. Better in fact than the purpose made JVC HD video camera we bought for the job.

The main drawback with the NX20 was the lack of microphone jacks which has been rectified on the NX30. The issue with the NX20 at the back of the hall with camera mounted mics was that they picked up all the audience noise. We got around this in a big hall by using Sennheiser walkaround radio mics for the speakers, recording the audio separately and mixing the result in software.

This would be an impossible drag for casual use but as we were charging for the DVD we had to do a proper commercial grade video edit anyway and the guy we used had no difficulty synchronising up sound and video.

I think a better choice would be a Sony NEX 6 with 16-50mm PZ. In the US it is on clearance now for about $524 US. http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Compact-Interchangeable-Digital-16-50mm/dp/B0096W1OKS

The 100D is still SLR thick, they can't make it any thinner.

Jaberwok has some great advice on shooting video as well, I haven't ever done much video so try not to comment too much about it.

The Sony seems to have pretty much everything. I did try a NEX 5 once, but I just couldn't get on with the menus. Shame they didn't put a touch screen on there as well.

The ultimate camera for me would be the Olympus OMD M1 - compact, fantastic viewfinder, very rapid accurate AF, great set of lenses (with models that are near silent focusing). Great interface, features etc. but at over £1k it's out of my budget...

Olympus cameras are not exactly famous from their video quality. if video is important then why not panasonic e.g. g5 or g6?

video? you need Panasonic camera or BlackMagic. both can use fast AF m4/3 lenses.

Keep the NX system and buy a video camera.

I never liked to film using big camera like this (no matter Samsung or Sony or Olympus).

Tiny thing like Panasonic Lumix TZ61 (ZS40 in the USA) is much better solution... at least to me!

  • up to 30x optical zoom (!) absolutely silent
  • much better image stabilisation
  • good audio quality; even in loud rock concerts
  • pocket-size

I am also in the same position lately, i had started my journey with the nx system 1 year ago with an nx1000 (coming from a canon eos 450D).

Over the year i upgraded my camera to nx300 and in the meantime i had obtained the following lenses 30mm, 12-24mm, 50-200mm, 18-55mm, 20-50mm. Iq and money wise the most of them were pretty good but i proved wrong when i thought that i could replace entirely my dslr with a mirrorless system. Lately i have participated 2 photography exhibitions and the quality of the nx system served me well but it is time to step up and get something better and more suitable for professional photography (especially photojournalism and flash/studio photography).

That is why i am selling everything from the nx system (the 18-55mm, 50-200mm, 20-50mm are already gonne) and i purchased a Nikon D7000 and i am planning to get a fuji x100 for a second body.

In this way i will be able to do my professional photoshots as well as maintain a small camera for street photography.

I would perhaps up skill rather than change systems. The cameras are fine for professional work. I have both Nikon FF and Samsung mirrorless. For small sized prints and web work you won't notice the difference between the images. Where the pro systems come in is the much better low light capability and usually weatherproofing and the general build strength. I've broken 2 NX bodies and 2 lenses n the rough and tumble of using them to earn a living.

Don't fall into the trap of thinking a more expensive system will improve your photography.

A Nikon D7000 is good but it is still an amateur camera in DX format.

A Nikon D7000 is good but it is still an amateur camera in DX format.

In fact its an OLD Amateur DX camera . even the D800E is a "Pro-Sumer" (basically a D200 development) . Many use D7000s and D300s still for work and they serve well though .

I`d have stuck with the NX300 over the X100 (S 0r Original) , the 20-50`s wide end is better than the X100`s optic at the same apertures , the resolution difference is immense (the NX system being both sharper at pixel level AND 20Mp) and the NX300 is actually more compact , especially with a Prime on .

So I agree - I`d have offloaded the NX stuff bar the 20-50 & NX300 bodyand then got a D7100 rather than a D7000 + X100 as the D7100 outperforms the D7000 in every way, especially resolution and AF , the NX300 outperfoms the X100 in every way except High ISO JPGs

I can understand switching an NX300 for D7000 as you get broader lens options and a bit more operation speed, and the gain seems relative small to me for all the hassle of it, but buying additionally a X100 seems really pointless, as it has fixed lens in a range covered by Samsung's prime lenses, bigger than NX300, and IIRC has about the same IQ and slower operation and AF speed.

And you most certainly lose money in the exchange.

the canon 100d imo isn't very good for video, no tilting the screen, the live view af is  sluggish, and you don´t have more then 30 fps mode  either, plus no peaking, zebras etc. I´m actually selling it because I´m not to happy with the video limitations of it.

These aren't big deals for me (laggy live view might be a bit annoying though). The NX20 was only 30fps anyway, the file sizes at 1080p @60fps are probably pretty huge I think.

I never used the flip/tilt function on the NX20 when shooting video. I think I used it about twice for doing a "selfie" type snapshot with the kids and that was it.

Whilst I am reasonably serious about taking decent photos, my video requirements are pretty casual.

I just want to flip a switch, get a couple of minutes of my kids, or pets, doing something daft and then watch it without a lens motor or OIS whine interfering with the experience, whilst taking advantage of the image quality of a DSLR or system mirrorless. I also don't want to carry a separate camcorder to do that.

I like the sound of the Sony NEX6, but after having gone to look at some Canons again recently, the menus and controls are just so much more natural. It feels like you are using a camera rather than a gadget.

The STM lenses seem to do the business too...
