GH4 4K video editor/trimmer. Any recommendation for low cost or free editor?

HI, I just need an editor that can edit/trim the 4k (MOV format) and save as 4k (MOV) or 1080 FHD.

The 4k video is very big in file size and I would like to trim it with no loss (if possible) in quality and archive them.

thanks

To keep this thread alive.....

It made me Google about 4K editing and it seems nightmares are the order of the day. Never found a freebie but reasonable cost 4K editors seem to abound. It's the hardware to do the edits that is a problem and the need for a 4K monitor to see if everything is OK.

Video at 4K seems to be a mega shift in cost and complications. Good luck !

Regards..... Guy

For trimming video, my first choice is Avidemux for any format other than AVI. For AVI containers, my first choice is Virtualdub. Both can do lossless cutting.

For MOV files, you can save them as MP4 or MKV with Avidemux with no loss of quality. MOV is just the container and MP4/MKV should be able to handle the same video streams (e.g. h264) as MOV. I don't believe Avidmux has the option of MOV yet, but it shouldn't make any difference.

Then, if you want to convert MOV or MP4 to AVI with no loss of quality, you can use a program called MP4Cam2AVI. Then you should be able to cut/trim the AVI with VirtualDub with no loss of quality. Note that AVI wasn't designed to natively handle h264 but, in practice, it works fine. But you'll have trouble going back to MOV/MP4/MKV from AVI.

This site http://www.personal-view.com/talks/categories/editors has some pretty good Editor discussions. I'll probably go with Final Cut Pro X, since I have a Mac. It will deal with 4K.

I can't do free, but I understand Sony Movie Studio does lossless editing provided you get the output quality to be the same as the input one. Also the suite version use to come with a big bunch of royalty-free music that made it a great buy (I have no idea if this is still true). You do need the latest version to do 4k though.

BTW do you have Photoshop CS6 or later? They can open GH4 4k videos and work with them!

I am using Kdenlive, which is free.

Here's a description of how I use it:

Interesting, thanks for posting that. I wonder if they'll do a Windows version at some point.

He was specifically after one that didn't re-compress anything it didn't have to, do you know if this is an option or does it always recompress?

I think it depends on which codec you choose as the output. But kdenlive is primarily a non-linear video editor, and it is in the nature of such a program to recompress. So not exactly what the OP asked for, I admit that.

You may be able to run it through virtualbox.

Re: GH4 4K video editor/trimmer. Any recommendation for low cost or free editor?

True, but you then have a linux o/s to care for and maintain, which may or may not be an issue for some people. Plus it does make the disk space requirements somewhat impressive.

BTW I'd have gone with VMWare Player as I prefer it to Virtual Box, but I get the latter is well-liked too.

I have 15 years of experience doing exactly what you're asking. Save yourself the trouble and just start and finish with my recommendation.

I've also used the couple other programs recommended here and can tell you they likely won't work or aren't what you're after. No offense to anyone. They're just not what you asked for.

Sony Movie Studio does not support properly row video. Any edit means 10 times longer wait than edited video length.

Re: GH4 4K video editor/trimmer. Any recommendation for low cost or free editor?

I did some research
Sony Movie Studio doesn't properly support 4k video, any edit means 10 times longer waiting then edited video.
Corel Video Studio doesn't support 4k and crash on video open
Magix Video Editor as Sony movie studio export video times slower than video length
Avidemux does not support LPCM sound

The only really fast solution I found is ffmpeg console tool

Re: GH4 4K video editor/trimmer. Any recommendation for low cost or free editor?

I have v12 and always found it to be very fast (with GH3 1080p videos), although I have a fast video card and GPU processing enabled.

I can't comment on the 4k performance as I haven't upgraded - they've changed too much.

For completeness - DaVinci Resolve Lite includes a 4k editor and is free, although the learning curve is quite something. Then again you get a pro-level colour grading program included too.

I did say it was complicated, but it's what a LOT of very serious video pros use...
