Lense suggestions

Body: Olympus E-PM2

Currently I have

- Olympus Kit lens II R 14-42 f3.5-5.6

- Panasonic Lumix GX 45-175 f4-5.6

- Olympus 17mm f1.8

Right now I feel I am pretty well covered when speed is not important and I slap on the 17mm when I take the camera out at night for better low light performance.

I was thinking of either getting the Olympus 45 1.8 or the Sigma 60 2.8 next for a faster medium tele / portrait lens / background blurring.

Or a 14mm f2.5 pancake to always keep on camera to put in jacket pocket.  (Don't know how useful this is as I already have the 17mm and the kit lens covers 14mm but its significantly smaller than both)

Or if I can find a good bargain than the Pan Leica 25mm f1.4.

You want to get something that complements your kit that you already have. The 14mm and 25mm might be a bit close to the 17mm you have. I'd go for either the 45mm or 60mm. My preference is the 45mm because of the faster aperture and more useful focal length. I'd find 60mm a bit long but that's a personal preference.

It's a question of personal preference. I put my money into the sigma 60mm, which I love and find more useful. Instead of the 45mm I use a cheap, fast Hexanon legacy 50mm.

Re: Lense suggestions

It really depends on your shooting habits and what you think you're missing. What focal lengths do you use the most? When out shooting, how do you feel limited by your kit?

The 45/1.8 is a lovely lens.

You might also consider the 12-40/2.8 for optical quality and speed compared to the kit.

How about an ultra-wide, the 7-14 or 9-18?

Re: Lense suggestions

I am pretty happy with the optical quality of the kit - i think its one of the best kit lenses around but yeah its slow.  Don't think I want to spend $800 on a bulky/heavy zoom lens that both of the pro zooms seem to be.

I normally shoot medium to wide, not a lot of very wide angle so don't see myself needing a 7mm.  I guess I am just concerned with my zooms being pretty slow but I find that I take the 17mm anyway to dark environments like restaurants etc.

I used to have the 20mm f1.7 from Panasonic but sold it only because I am experimenting with video and AF is too noisy on it that I could hear it on my videos.  17mm is good for that.

I would like something that will give me shallower depth of field without going to my 45-175 zoom which does blur the background out nicely at the longer end but I need to go further away from the subject to achieve it.  So I am thinking maybe the 45 1.8 or 60mm 2.8 fits the bill.  I don't really want to spend more than $500 so the 75mm is out of question.  I don't know if the 25mm 1.4 or 1.8 are long enough to achieve background blur like the 45 or 60.

Re: Lens suggestions

I'm very happy with my 45/1.8. It's very sharp, a great length for portraits and can nicely blur the background.

There are a lot of comparisons with the Sigma 60. https://www.google.com/search?q=olympus+45%2F1.8+vs+sigma+60%2F2.8

Here's a DOF calculator to compare with the 25mm, etc. http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html

The 45 would go perfect the kit you already have - normal zoom, long zoom, shortish prime. It is a great, inexpensive, small lens. Everybody should have one.

45/1.8 or 60/2.8

Both are fine. I have both.

Pick your favorite focal length or aperture.

Myself, I think the larger aperture of the 45/1.8 makes it more polyvalent. Also, it is smaller.

But the Sigma 60/2.8 is very very sharp, and, inexpensive.

Why not get one soon, then the other one later
