Remote shutter for OMD-EM10? (not wifi)
1

Hi I have the EM10, I know it has wifi for remote control, which is cool. However, I really prefer to have a manual shutter release , don't need to worry about phone battery, easier to just plug it in and click. I also have the E-PM2, and I bought this remote release product "Aputure Timer Camera Remote Control Shutter Cable" http://www.amazon.com/Aputure-Control-Shutter-Inexpensive-Intervalometer/dp/B003Y35VMM/ref=cm_cd_al_qh_dp_t

This works great with the E-PM2, just plug it in and press the button. But with the EM10, when I press the button, it seems to do something, like activate the auto focus or something, b/c there is some response from the camera, but the shutter does not release. So I am wondering if I need to adjust some setting in the EM10 to make it compatible with this cable release?

Alternatively, has anyone found a different cable release that works fine with the EM10?

I'm aware that this thread is ancient, but I'm having the same issue. Very annoying. Will not trigger in video either.

It seems that I'm not the only one having this problem.

I've tried two cheap remotes - both activated the autofocus but wont fire the shutter. Before I try the official Olympus RM-UC1 remote, can someone confirm that it works properly on the E-M10?

The first one I bought off ebay which was really inexpensive -- less than $5 -- also didn't work on the EM10.  I think its plug just doesn't insert deep enough into the camera, though I could be wrong.  The second one I bought, which was JJC branded and has a detachable cord and cost about $10, works fine on my EM10.

Thanks for the feedback.

Working on your assumption that the plug doesn't insert deeply enough into the camera's socket, I removed a small sliver of plastic surrounding the plug on the cable and voilà! The cable now focuses the lens and fires the shutter!

Problem (hopefully) solved.

Cutting a thin piece of plastic away solved the problem with my eBay-purchased remote shutter release as well. Thanks for the solution!

This one works with the E-M1. I can't speak for the E-M10.

Plug problems.
1

This all smells like the usual "plug is too big" syndrome.

I found that problem with a Hahnel radio remote release when the plug jammed in the camera and came apart when extracted. Problem is the plug size being too big.

Here's the regular Oly USB cable plug....

Appears to be the nominal 1/4 inch (6.35mm) or a bit less.

Now the Hahnel plug....

Hahnel plug too big at 6.42mm

Applied a small file to the sides to reduce to 6.35mm or less and the plug now fits smoothly.

Hahnel were good about it, I contacted them in Ireland and they said they would notify engineering, and sent me two spare cables to Sydney that were also too big, but now filed and fixed.

Regards..... Guy

Re: Remote shutter for OMD-EM10? (not wifi)

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I had boxed up the cheapo remote shutter and was about to throw it in the trash when I read this post. I cut off the plastic "collar" and to my amazement the switch works great with my E-M10 now.

I did have to tape the case together because one of the plastic screws is broken....but you get what you pay for! And given how rarely I use this, I really didn't want to invest more money.

The wifi is a nice idea but it's unreliable with my phone so I don't trust it.

I hate resurrecting old threads but -

I bought  Chinese remote. Had exactly the same problem . It did work on the E620 but not on my em10. Until I read this thread and pared a little bit of plastic of f the end of the cable.

Voila, a perfect remote cable.

thanks for this thread

Re: Remote shutter for OMD-EM10? (not wifi)

I have used Olympus RM-UC1 wired remote on E-M1 and it works fine for half press, full-release as well as shutter lock. The link below indicates that it is compatible with E-M10

That cable works on all Oly M4/3 except the E-PL1 where they left that ability out for crazy unknown reasons.

After using wired products it was a nice change to use a cheapo small Lenovo Android tablet. Control from a reasonable distance, touch screen shooting from a distance. Perfect. Cable tangle days are over.

The same tablet works with my E-P5, my wife's Casio ZR850 and my Sony HDR-AS20 little action camera, using the appropriate free programs of course from the Google store

Plus now a Windows program does the same with the Olympus WiFi as well https://rebs.biz/cc/en/index.html

Re: Remote shutter for OMD-EM10? (not wifi)

Thanks for the tip, I tried my cheep ebay remote shutter that I used with my e420 and also got just the autofocus with no shutter release, so it was a pleasant surprise to read this fix today.

I also found that the official olympus USB cable for my e420 doesn't connect securely for the same reason. It makes enough contact to transfer pictures and do the firmware update, but it doesn't feel very secure at all. They obviously increased the recess or reduced the surrounding clearence with the OMD m43 cameras.

Re: Remote shutter for OMD-EM10? (not wifi)

Your issue almost certainly is that the shape of the plug on your remote shutter release is preventing it from being fully inserted and seated. I've had the same issue with the OM-D EM10 and a cheap remote shutter release from Amazon. When I pressed the remote shutter release button, the camera would focus, but the shutter would not release. Based on the suggestion from another thread on this forum, I resolved the issue by taking a knife and whittling away a bit of the plastic from the end of the plug so that it seated fully when inserted into the camera.
