I`ll be grabbing one (likely a used one) to replace the Ixus-500HS as soon as CHDK gets RAW support to this cam .

And there's your answer thanks to Brian!

I haven't had much of a chance to shoot low light, but when I've done so I have been quite impressed. And Brian's shots prove it

CHDK is available. I have it installed but haven't had time to play with it. (I posted this a few weeks ago and no one replied to my post

Hey, that's awesome! I haven't been around lately, so I'm sorry I missed your post. I'll go find it though. Very exciting actually!

I'm not sure which post you were referring to Marty, but I found this one of yours:

There were some responses there for sure! Anyway, using the STICK installation program, I got CHDK installed on my card very quickly, then shot and processed a DNG file in LR4, and I am totally stoked! Thanks man!

Hi Wayne,

I just looked at your 330 shots, nicely done its an impressive little camera. The two 330 - Mine and father in laws have battery issues, I talked to canon and have to send it for repair, lucky its under warranty.

Cheers

I apologize for the camera shake - it was handheld - but I don't apologize for the amazing quality from the 330HS.  I had to convert this before uploading and therefore am not sure if it would look even better on youtube if I had been able to use their conversion rather than that on my PC.

Thanks Steve! Yes, I was already impressed with it before. But now that I have CHDK on it and am able to shoot raw, I am uber-impressed. The detail of the sensor/lens is really quite amazing in the raw files, so now I am really excited to get shooting with it.

This album has a test shot in raw (converted to jpg) as well as the camera's jpg (iso 320):

If you look at the original of each image, and at the trees to the right of the mast, you can really see the extra detail that the raw file has - more than I was expecting actually. Awesome!

These are really interesting experiments, and I can see an improvement in the detail of your raw shots, but I am always interested to see if it is possible to make jpg look as good, so here is my adjustments to your jpg image, hope you don't mind.

The adjustment:

changed color temperature to 6000 deg K

added brightness +5 and contrast +10

applied a little sharpening.

Adjusted jpg

I think the raw is still slightly better, but it would be interesting to try adjusting the in camera sharpness to +1 for the jpg, this seems to also have the affect of reducing NR.

Re: Looks Great Wayne

Good stuff Brian! I'll check out your adjustment more when I'm not on my tablet. Fyi, those were both processed minimally in LR4, with the sharpness set to 25 for both. I used the auto tone preset on the raw image, which explains the contrast difference. My feeling is that some more detail could maybe be eaked out of the in camera jpg via sharpening, but only so much because the detail is simply not there to the level of the raw image since the in camera noise reduction did it's thing. Whereas with the raw image, the detail is just there and ready to be enhanced/sharpened further if desired. I think though that I'll try to do what you did - enhance each image as much as I can, and see if I end up with the same excitement about the raw possibilities

Cheers,

I agree with your thoughts, also I think I went a bit too high with the contrast.

The only way the jpg could reach the raw standard of detail is by reducing the in camera NR which isn't made available to the end user, but I have found some surprising things happen when you move the sharpening up or down a notch, and have a suspicion it is linked to some small degree to the NR.  To verify this, try taking a low light shot at say ISO1600 at various sharpening settings.  It is my thought that canon may have minimal NR applied at ISO80 and ramp it up at higher ISO and link it slightly to the sharpening.  Its a complex system they have developed for noise control these days, but its still not able to match manually doing it from raw by an expert.

All of my theories on this have come from experimentation as there is next to nothing made available by the manufacturers.
