330 HS will do I think :)
2

Picked up the 330 HS today. I need a convenient P&S for those times when I don't feel like lugging around my massive Nikon V1 (lol), and from what I read, the 330 has pretty good IQ. I was a bit concerned about the lack of manual controls, but I don't think that will be much of an issue after playing around with it a bit today.

I only really had time to try out some macros, and yes, I can tell that the IQ will be more than adequate. I was happy to see that I could set the focus to spot focus, and also change the metering to spot, and set exposure compensation and control the ISO as desired (although auto iso worked well and it seems to control noise quite well). It's a pretty cool little camera actually, and I think I'll have fun with it and really enjoy it

Cheers,

Wayne

JB hi fi at Castledine Brisbane.  They show no stock online but there was one left with the words last one on a label near it.

He tried to interest me in the IXUS 265, and I said that it was dumbed down with less wide angle and DIGIC 4, and I asked him why would that happen, and he said that most people come in and don't have a clue so it doesn't matter.  So I guess they can use old production lines to push out a bit more stuff and maximise return on factory investment.

Looks Great Wayne - I`ll be grabbing one (likely a used one) to replace the Ixus-500HS as soon as CHDK gets RAW support to this cam .

Very nice shots, Wayne! I think you'll enjoy the 330 HS as long as you keep in mind its strengths and limitations (lack of more manual controls mainly--but then again, you have your Nikon when you want more control!). It's incredibly capable, and it's one of those cameras that makes me confident that I'll be very happy with the pictures I take with it. I'm strongly considering finding another one myself, although I see that prices are increasing as more and more people like us are trying to snatch them up. Looking forward to seeing more shots from your 330!

Thanks from what I've read the 265 is inferior esp in low light. Cheers Steve

Thanks Adam! I took some landscapes today, and when viewing at 100%, I noticed the patented CMOS watercolor noise reduction in effect. I guess I've gotten used to RAW with the V1 files, which are pretty clean.

A few years back, you convinced me to get the S210 for it's CCD sensor (I also had the CHDK hack going for it), and the IQ was quite good. Sadly I had to let the S210 go a while back.

I was initially thinking that I wouldn't bother with the CHDK hack for the 330, but I suppose that I should consider it assuming that l'd be able to then control the effects of the noise reduction somewhat (I'm assuming LR4 would be able to handle the 330's DNG files as it does the S210's). Do you think the 330's DNG image quality will be comparable to the S210's?

And which thread do you follow to determine when the CHDK is available? I've been looking here.

Thanks!

That is a good story - now you'll be able to shoot with both hands lol! It was pretty neat today walking around and shooting single handedly. Quite a small and responsive little beast!

Thanks for bringing up the 2x digital multiplier - I never would have thought of trying that!

Cheers,

Thanks Steve. It's going to be great having a very nice little camera like the 330hs that I should be able to have with me pretty much all of the time (I've missed that!).

Thanks Andy, and thanks to you and Brian for posting about the 330 and making me aware of it. I had quite a blast today at a parade. It's a very responsive little camera, fast focusing, good metering, great IQ for the price. Excellent!

Thanks again Steve. I'm strongly contemplating glueing on a step up ring onto the little beast, mainly for a polarizer. But I could then also put my Olympus Bmacro lens on it which would be fun, but potentially disastrous because the Bmacro lens is a bit heavy. I'll probably table that idea lol.

A friend is interested in a small Canon camera. She wouldn't be shooting RAW. Would the 330 HS do as well for her as an S110? In low light?

My Brother still has mine and uses it .

I finally got another SX220 , it`s terrible for smeary NR in JPG but in RAW it rocks due to the far cleaner CMOS sensor, almost as good as the one in the SX50 . I had a 260 but the lens is poor at the edges at the wide end and its soft at the long end when the JPG engine isn`t compensating, the old 210/220/230 lens is a lot better

I haven't had much of a chance to shoot low light, but when I've done so I have been quite impressed. And Brian's shots prove it
