Not good for low light

This camera is only good for bright area. I have Canon G12, and I was happy with it. Therefore, I bought Canon S110. It is definitely not the same class.

You need to place it on a tripod, set IS OFF, use ISO80 and use Manual Focus (5m comes out better for landscapes than infinity, I've noticed). Then it's okey for very low light. Actually I'm happy with it in relative low light conditions like indoors. I can use ISO80, 1/2 shutter with IS ON handheld and it renders good. Even ISO800 with IS and 1/2 renders surprisingly good. It all depends on what you want to do with it and that you understand how different settings affect your pictures and you must have steady hands. I don't know about auto modes, I only use P and M where I set everything myself.

Shame it's limited to 1 second for ISO100 and higher so you can't take overexposed landscapes in the dark because 15 seconds just aren't enough in ISO80. This is my only complaint. I sense frustration from your part. We don't know what you did since you didn't tell us any details. Small cameras won't give you the same quality as SLRs. But I have absolutely nothing bad to say about the picture quality of S110. This has 12 megapixels where as my screen has 2 megapixels, so obsessing over 100% crops would be rather funny as I can never see the full picture that way. When viewing fullscreen it's all up to the resampling piece of code how it comes through. Some programs resample smooth, some sharp, some blocky.

Not sure how you are using the S110; but if set the same as the G12, it should do better in low light because of the faster lens.  That's only going to be true at wide angle where the S100 is an f/2, and the G12 is f/2.8.  The S110 has a much slower lens at full zoom than the G12 does, so someplace in between they will "cross over" and have equal F#'s.  I've owned the G11 and G12 and thought it's low light capability was good; but not outstanding.  I also own the S95 which is quite similar to the S110 and find it does quite well in low light, and nearly as good as my G15.

If you'd like to repost and let us know how you have the camera set up; we could make better comments.

looking at his ratings, it may be a case of misplaced expectations

Yeah, I have no idea what this poster is going on about. The s100/s110 is definitely better in low light than the g12, because of the difference in lens aperture.

Not really the g12 is an F2.8-4.5

the S100/110 is an F2.0-5.9

So the G12 is actually a lot faster at the long end.

It won't make an dramatic impact though and both have terrible high ISO's

The S series are the best cameras Canon ever made. The G series were a serious step backwards....
