How to trigger 2 cameras simultaneously ?

Helllo

I was wondering what is the best way to control shutter release simultaneously for two cameras mounted side by side for 3d photos mainly?

I have a Panasonic GH3 and a GH4 which should be delivered soon.

Any Ideas ?

2 identical Canon Powershots & CHDK & the 3D options

Too late for you, but CHDK software (free, from Russian(?) volunteers), which loads within the Canon camera OS (with several PowerShot models), allows a lot of different control options, including firing two (same model) cameras for creating stereo pairs.

I have used CHDK about 5 years ago on my Canon powershot A710 IS but this software hack does not work on my Panasonic GH line bodies.

It is either that Panasonic are hard to hack into or they dont have a backdoor to allow it !

The Panasonic GH3 and GH4 and other Panasonic cameras use a wired remote control.

The remote control unit is DMW-RSM1 it has a 2.5mm jack with 4 connections on it. As far as I can tell you need to connect to at least 3 of the connections

This site gives a lot of information about how it works
http://www.robotroom.com/Macro-Photography-2.html

It should be possible to build a unit which will allow one push-button to activate two cameras. I am an electronics engineer and the following is what I think you would need

2 x 2.5mm jack connectors ( same as used on the DMS-RSM1 )
2 x small signal n-p-n transistors ( BC337 or similar )
1 x push button switch ( it has two contacts on it which short together when the button is pressed )
2 x 1.8k resistors
2 x 10k resistor
2 x 39k resistor
I can give you more information on how to connect these components if you wish. On testing the unit it may be found some of the resistor values need adjusting.

More than likely, no one has bothered to attempt to hack your cams.

Feel free to go right ahead and hack them.

Have you checked my post with simple scheme (for GH and other Panasonic cameras):

There is an elecronic device for 3dstereo-twinning GH-cams. Ask the people in photo3d-yahoo-techgroup or google.

Buy two wireless remote controls, put a receiver each on the cameras, set the receivers to the same frequency and trigger the receivers with one of the senders.

For some wireless controls you can buy a receiver seperately which is less expensive than buying two full sets.

BTW, if your cameras have WiFi (which I think the GH3 and GH2 have) then it might be

possible to use that instead. I have not used WiFi though, so I can't tell how it works.

You can buy 2 of those cables, cannibalize one by cutting the plug, open the second one and solder the same color wires together. I've done that for Olympus and this work. The timing is good but not too much, better after focusing. You can do it with 2 cable for wireless remote and trigger the cameras from distance also. I've done that also.

GH2 doesn't have WiFi.

By the way, how do you suppose to trigger TWO cameras simultaneously via WiFi?

Note that Panasonic does not have the same system as Olympus. You cannot just solder the same wires together. The resistors should be modified, as I've already mentioned here:

My fault, I meant of course GH4 which the OP was asking about.

I don't have any experioence of it, as I said. But I know that a WiFi LAN or a WiFi hotspot

supports two or more computers, so I guess one mobile phone could be used to trigger

two cameras.

Re: How to trigger 2 cameras simultaneously ?

One of the japanese 3D-Gurus(Stereomaker=?) has shown its 1000D(XS-solution) on facebook. Ask openkmq-man o berlin about that. He published two images of the setup/wiring. I have seen diodes too. maybe we will see that or is already shown on photo3d-yahoo.

You have to pair the camera with the mobile. Usually there exists two-way communication between the mobile and the camera. Therefore, it would surprise me if you could pair one mobile with more cameras (but I might be wrong).

I'd like to hear if any camera supports such solution (pairing with multiple cameras).

Yes, for cameras with simple switch for triggering you need diodes due to different potentials of 2 cameras.

I think it was stereophotomaker-guru Masuji Suto. btw: is working on a html5-3dvideo-solution-is already working(not all browsers).anaglyph and paralle shown.
