Canon IXUS 255/Elph 330 auto focus doesn't work?

I've just purchased a Canon Ixus 255 HS online and when I was testing the zoom I noticed that it doesn't focus?! Look at my examples taken with a very strong lamp pointing at the subject.

My 255 focusses very accurately, what I do is make shure I half press with the centre square on a well defined edge of a part of the scene that is the main subject, that is what contrast focussing needs, then once the square has gone green while I am still holding the half press, I reframe the shot as I want it then fully press the shutter.  Never have any problems.

The problem with AUTO is that there is multiple focussing squares, so you don't have a clue what will be in focus, that's just another reason not to use AUTO.

Is your focus mode set on infinity? That's the icon that resembles a mountain, make sure it's set to normal.
