Only in infrared.

...right. Moving on.

Let's give you a poor grade in reading comprehension. ON THE INFRARED CAMERA it does. Otherwise, no, it doesn't. The 12-40 is fantastic in visible light, and not too bad in infrared either.

Hi!

I like to carry this lens when I travel because it is small and light. I think that's a good lens. Some close ups taken with this lens:

DON'T rely on DPR posted photos.

DPR softens photos mercilessly. And the kit lens is, at best, adequately sharp enough. But DPR can make it look worse than it does. Try to view your samples on Flickr or one of the other photo sharing sites.

Here is a link to a kit lens photo I took that resides on Flickr:

As regards the kit lens, I'm lucky enough to have come from a 4/3s DSLR and a sizable investment in DSLR lenses, so with the right adapter, I can use them without compromise.  I still use the kit lens, but only when speed and unobtrusiveness is as important as IQ.

Sharper stopped down a bit

One thing you can see from the review on slrgear.com

http://slrgear.com/reviews/showcat.php/cat/15

is that this lens gets sharper stopped down a bit. This can have an impact on your close-ups in that you can't really control depth of field as much as you normally would, at least not without giving up sharpness.

In the test I mentioned above (where I mainly did the test with the IR body to test infrared, but then also on the non IR camera just to see), I tested at f 5.6 on all the lenses. This is probably a weak point for this lens at longer focal lengths, where it really needs to be stopped down.

I don't mean to be obnoxious by suggesting an expensinve lens, but the Olympus 60 f2.8 is the nicest macro lens ever. I've done a lot of macro photography, in the past with some classic and well regarded Nikkor macro lens. This Olympus 60 macro lens is just stupendously fantastic.
