Just joined the M4/3 cult....
1

Purchased an Oly EPM2 with 14-42 and 40-150. It will take the place of my Panasonic P&S which served well for a few  years but finally fell apart. The Oly is now my P&S but with a large sensor! Looking forward to getting to know the camera and its inner workings. Its tiny. Its toy like. It weights nothing. Amazing. The Pany P&S was bigger and heavier. Hope to post a few more when I know the camera better.

cheers and beers,

Joe

But not the kool-aid ...

Don't you just love Oly's realistic hues?  The bananas look like real bananas, not with unreal, surreal or hyped hues and color shifts.  Welcome to the "cult."  But don't drink the kool-aid.  It's just gear, not religion.

Welcome!  You can have a lot of fun with the E-PM2.  It was my introduction to m43 as well and I grew very fond of it.  The 14-42IIr is serviceable but the 40-150mm is quite good.

Joe,

Nice image.  I just ordered an E-PM2 with kit lens today and really wondering how it will do taking closeups of flowers, either at the 14mm end or the 42mm end.  Could you possibly try to take a few and post then here tomorrow?  I would really appreciate it.

Here are a couple of examples of close ups taken with my Panasonic ZS19 P&S, which does a pretty good job using the macro zoom.

Thanks,

Joel

Welcome ... you're going to have a lot of fun.

I note from your gear list that you might have old Nikon gear - do not sell your old Nikon glass until you look carefully at some of the neat Nikon-M43 adapters and focal reducers which are available, you can do some neat stuff with old lenses and M43.

Re: Just joined the M4/3 cult....

Thanks everyone for the welcome. In the context of a photo forum "shoot" would mean one thing to me: get out the heavy artillery (those long telephotos) and take a shot or two.

Thanks Eric, I do indeed have a few (well more than a few) Nikon lenses from the early 1970's onward to today's auto everything lenses. I have ordered an adapter to give those lenses a new "shot" at life.

A week end approaches and if all goes to plan I should be able to spend a bit of time with my new toy, getting acquainted with settings, figuring out focus points, squinting into the lcd (its quite bright around here) and just enjoying the stealth aspect of this camera.

Me too!

After many years in 35 mm, I got out of photography as I wasn't prepared to chase the technology.   I have been using a Canon G1X for a couple years and I have been planning a µ4/3 system.  I am awaiting a house sale to purchase the desired system (and some yet to be released lenses), but I just couldn't resist the sale on the E-PM2 and lenses.

The decision to go with the µ4/3 is primarily weight.  I have no qualms about the IQ with the sensor size, but I hike and backpack and keeping things light is more important as I get older.  This new E-PM2 will give me a little more flexibility and reach for the summer and perhaps get me used to some of the quirks of Olympus' menus and way of operating.

Does anyone make a third party book to get the most from the E-PM2?

I do not think Rx10 owners have formed a cult.

Get the Super Control Panel activated

Unlike the Oly DSLRs, where you could bring most of your controls on-screen by tapping the OK button, the E-PM2 and PL5 (and other non-OMD cameras) come from the factory with the SCP turned off and ridiculously hidden in the menus… with cryptic instructions on how to unlock it.

Guy Parsons has a good collection of in-depth instructions on the E-PL5 and many of these will be helpful to E-PM2 users.

Welcome, this is a great forum and here's a link to some custom settings for the E-PL5. I'm sure many will work on your new gear.

Re: Just joined the M4/3 cult.... heh, heh, cult is right! :)

But did you notice that this is one cult where you don't have to get down on your knees? The gear is so light, you see …

Nice pic. Signature Oly colors. I have a Panny GM1 for my "P&S" alternative. Same thinking -- small size, big sensor.

Cheers, geoff

Re: Get the Super Control Panel activated, Bobby

Thanks for the link to Guy's pages, Bobby. (I guess he's been sleeping!)

Specific to the SCP: http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~parsog/olyepl1/53-epl5-scp.html

When I see an E-PM2 or E-PL5 on display in the store, I try to invoke the SCP as a favour to the eventual buyer. I never seem to quite get it, by memory. It's a ridiculous path to get the SCP turned on — but well worth it.

Thankfully, my E-M1 came with it ON already. Oly seems to have listened.

Thanks for that.  My my,  if I knew it was that convoluted, I may have passed on the purchase.  Guy's pages appear to be good resources on the menus.  This is what I was looking for in third party material.   There few things more frustrating than trying to learn a complex tool by reading the provided directions.

Well, I guess it's time for new neural pathways - this is the stuff that keeps your brain young.  Perhaps I will have to buy a new camera more often just to keep my brain young!

Don't worry too much about it. A lot of the setup stuff is done once, and forget. For most usage you never need to go into the menus. It's dead simple after the camera is setup.
