Re: Samsung image quality

Truest words you will read. People seem to believe if it doesn't have a mirror box it doesn't take proper photographs , this attitude drives me nuts.

Trying to capture the images i see around me.

I know somebody with a D800e who thinks a Sony A7r is a "point and shoot". From a guy who only shoots in auto mode...

My pet hate is the LinkedIn photo groups. A very prevalent view is if it's not a Nikon / Canon full frame then it's not a serious camera. Full stop-no debate.

I'm sure if you look at my other posts on the forum, or my Flickr photostream, you will be reassured that I am an enthusiastic Samsung camera owner/user, and no troll.

The choice of camera used is entirely down to the OP.

Thank you but I was aware of that.

Nothing is stopping you using whatever camera you like as photography is a subjective imaging thing. An exact physical science it isn't, although the pixel pushers at ISO 200,000 on the Nikon forum would have it that way.

I agree, it is quite a subjective topic, hence i was asking for people's opinions.

I don't think Avon & Somerset Police have yet established a camp on Exmoor for 'camera re-education' sponsored by the Canikon Consortium, so go with whatever makes you happy.

As an ex -professional purchasing officer, I can again reassure you that I will make my own decision on which camera I buy.

The whole premise is something similar to what I saw in photo show in Dublin last week where a woman teacher was buying her first 'serious' camera to photograph a school outing. She started off sensibly enough looking for an easy compact. Then the sales manager earned his money and she bought a very good Canon DSLR and 2 lenses. It took both credit cards of her and partner to pay for it. The clincher was the sales guy telling her that this was a professional grade Canon 'used by Pro's, you know' and will get you far better pictures than a little compact..'

Half the above is in the mind: It's a Canon / Nikon / Leica so it MUST produce better pictures than a Samsung / Fuji etc?

I think that you are right as regards the majority of camera buyers, or indeed those buying any sort of technology. I buy what I like, and finances, or rather lack of them, tends to keep me away from the temptation of a big brand name.

I used to be the type who always went with the best of the brand names.  Now I am far wiser, one reason being that the internet is full of objective test data that allows consumers to make an educated purchase.  This what led me to my NX20 -- objective test data made me conclude that save for low light, at the time of purchase its IQ plus other features made it second only to the NEX-7.  I got an exception deal on the camera and lenses such that getting the better low-light performance would cost twice as much.

Now, I am looking to upgrade and have settled on a Sony A7r; however, test data shows that for my range of use, the Sony kit lens zoom performs the same (if not slightly better) than the Sony Zeiss zoom for a price of $700 less.  Snobs will argue about "build quality" but that is very subjective.

That's the issue Joe - I don't have a DSLR when I need better image quality than my EX1 can give me (mainly low light pictures).

So, I took the plunge yesterday and bought a (used) Canon G1 X that should give me near DSLR quality but still be small enough to carry around with the EX1 in the other pocket.

And that purchase has nothing to do with brand names! It's to do with the G1 X being the only compact camera with a large sensor and fully articulating screen that I can afford - at least that I know of.

I'm sure that the Canon takes good photos, but I'm generally not a fan of  cropped sensor compacts with slow fixed zooms. The G1X  probably takes good shots up to ISO 1600, but I've found that the EX1 does about the same up to 400. The EX1 zoom is about 2 stops faster so it's a wash.  Take a look at the last posted sample, of Epcot Morocco.  That was shot at ISO 400 and f1.8 and probably cleaned up a bit in post processing. One of the beauties of a small sensor camera is great depth of field wide open. I doubt whether the Canon would have produced a better final image.

I do like crop sensor cameras like the Samsung NX 20 (which I also own) because you can use fast primes for low light work.   Of course the NX 20 also has a significant resolution advantage over both the compact EX 1 and the Canon. However, it's not pocketable and I still prefer the little EX1 for some uses.

A used Samsung NX1000 might have been worth your consideration, outfitted with the kit 20-50 zoom and a 30 mm prime.  The camera has always been a bargain. However it lacks an articulating screen.

The low light ability of a full frame camera like the D800 is on a entirely different plane. I would consider a full frame compact with a slowish but high quality zoom.

Of course everyone has different needs and preferences, so enjoy your camera! In the end it's your vision and imagination, not the camera, that counts the most.

Re: I still like the EX1 (samples)

Looking at my EX1 pictures over the last few days, I feel that I am getting that 'new car syndrome'. You know where you are going to buy a new car, and the one that you have suddenly seems to start to running like a dream.

Certainly processing from RAW boosts the image quality in some pictures. It will be very interesting to spend a few days comparing the same pictures taken with both the EX1 and G1 X! I certainly won't be retiring the EX1.

NX30 v D300 low light IQ

As an aside..... How does the low light (1600 & 3200asa) performance of the NX30 compare to a Nikon D300? Just wondering if someone may have one of each to compare....  Thanks

Hi!

You can have a look at the studio comparison tool (Nikon D300s and NX210):

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/studio-compare?utm_campaign=internal-link&utm_source=mainmenu&utm_medium=text&ref=mainmenu#baseDir=%2Freviews_data&cameraDataSubdir=boxshot&indexFileName=boxshotindex.xml&presetsFileName=boxshotpresets.xml&showDescriptions=false&headerTitle=Studio%20scene&headerSubTitle=Standard%20studio%20scene%20comparison&masterCamera=nikon_d300s&masterSample=nikond300s_iso3200-acr&slotsCount=4&slot0Camera=nikon_d300s&slot0Sample=nikond300s_iso3200-acr&slot0DisableCameraSelection=true&slot0DisableSampleSelection=true&slot0LinkWithMaster=true&slot1Camera=samsung_nx210&slot1Sample=sam_2335.acr&x=0.9599510204081634&y=-1.2936274726407728

But please keep in mind that:

1. Nikon D300s should be a little bit better than D300.

2. Samsung NX210 should be a little bit worse than NX30.

3. D300s (D300) has a 12MP and NX210 (NX30) has 20MP --> for a real comparison you have to break the 20MP down to 12MP.

Conclusion:

NX30 should be a little bit better at ISO 3200 than D300 in RAW.

I know what you mean!  I've experienced the same effect with many choices, eg homes, jobs, etc. Fortunately  we have a tendency to increasingly approve of our choices after we're firmly committed.

It would be interesting if you'd shoot some challenging scenes with both, (In raw), give each file a good post process, and post the results.

I'll do that when the G1 X arrives here, and I've had time to find the appropriate scenes.
