Back by the lake - Arctic loon
these birds are supposed to be difficult to get close to so I believe I struck some luck this time.
Shot with K5 - Sigma 50-500 HSM OS at 450mm.
Looking good Peter.

I shoot birds.
You'd have to be "loonie" not to like those photos! Beautiful birds and you got some great shots of them... 1/125th on a 450mm focal length still looks very sharp -- GREAT JOB!
A word is worth 1/1000th of a picture... Maybe that's why I use so many words!
Loons are my favorite birds, i grew up in a wild place and loons were part of our nights, love them when they sign !
I think the Bigma is doing a good job.
If you stay away from 500mm and stop down a bit, the result isn't too bad.
The last pic is close to 100% crop BTW.
I agree, the sign is as close to 'call of the wild' as it gets. Love it!
Well I'll try, would like to get some pics when there is no wind with the water being really black.
Thanks Peter, great shots. I get to Nova Scotia about every three or four years and love to hear Loons, but I've never got anywhere near close enough to take shots like these. (I've a 400mm, though I don't travel with it.) They seem quite shy and retiring birds.
Thanks again, Rod
