NX1100 - B&W Aerial Views
1

A couple of other members have recently posted some B&W processed images that reminded me of my liking for the ability of B&W to emphasize textures and shapes.

So I reprocessed (in Capture One Pro) a few of my recent aerial photos that I've taken while flying.

I think some of yours might have contributed to the decision to re-process.

This is a very low level aerial. No, I wasn't busting minimums!

I'm not 100% sure about black and white. The original is below. Decisions, decisions!

Glad to see I'm not the only one. Can't make my mind up on whether the B&W or Colour looks best of those two. Both are interesting. Whereabouts is it and are you a PPL as well?

It's a Victorian coastal fort in Cork, Ireland, now being restored.

I have a PPL but that was done with a commercial helium lifting balloon from about 150ft? I run a business using a 50Ft telescopic mast and balloon. Most of the stuff I do is below 200ft which is the legal max AGL for a kite-balloon and well under the aircraft 500ft hard deck.

This is one shot with the NX20 effect filter set to 'classic'. What it does is set the colour settings to greyscale and do a very good job of blowing the highlights to pure white. The original image needs a fair bit of post processing to pull the contrast back.

I've not tried this on the NX30 hopefully it's better?

Re: NX1100 - B&W Aerial Views

Thanks for the info. I thought it looked like the Victorian fort at Portsmouth, but didn't look quite right!. I've been to Cork a few times on business but never had a chance to venture from the town centre. Maybe cause for a visit some time on holiday.

I do like this. The more extreme contrast B&W images appeal to me. Lots of interesting shapes and patterns in this one.

Fort Meagher-Camden. 10 miles south of Cork at Crosshaven, opposite the lighthouse at Roche's Point. It's well worth a visit as it's an 'unmolested' Victorian fort as it was never rebuilt in WW1 - WW2 like the British ones. I'm involved in the restoration group: we have a lot of guys over from the Palmerston Forts Society to see what theirs looked like when new. You'd be very welcome, bring boots and a hard hat!
