Please recommend a flash for my EM1

Got the EM1 and 12-40 earlier this year. Realize that I might need a good flash despite the 2.8 lens I have. Any recommendations?

My old FL-36 works just fine with the E-M1.

What about Rokinon D980AFZ-OP? Is that any good?

Given the price of less than $100 it is definitely in my price range.

The 600R for $299 is way off...

The FL50R, it is still the best and the only pro-grade Olympus unit.

I agree and use it as well.

Re: Please recommend a flash for my EM1

Sure, it looks great but I am not professional so $400+ for a flash is way too much for me.

Any other suggestion that is more reasonable price wise?

Use a radio slave

It takes a bit of learning — but getting your flash off the camera can make a much better lighting effect.

With a radio slave,  you can choose from any brand of flash. Whichever you choose, I'd recommend a 4-battery one, for range and refresh rate. Also look for easy adjustments of flash power.

If mainly shooting in a range up to 20 feet the fl300r is unbeatable. Does nice full wireless also.

Here in Europe the Metz flashes (Metz 44 and Metz 52) are available for 150$ which is half the price of a fl600r. They are fully compatible with Oly TTL flash system and even work in RC mode.

They more than powerful enough for bounce flash and in this case their weight is no issue at all.

I'm perfectly satisfied with a Metz 36 using a Panasonic. It's all TTL, but along with a StoFen Omnibounce and remote cord for off camera, I can do anything I need indoors or out.

The Nissin Di466 is TTL/manual and seems popular.

Both the Metz 36 and NIssin are in the $130 US price range. Mine popped up at Amazon Warehouse for $90.

The only reason I would need the manual option is for strong backlighting and with legacy lenses. It must not understand the lack of auto-stop down.

I initially tried it as a starter flash, but I really don't think I'll ever need more.

It would be nice to have the swivel head, but that's just one more thing to break, and I have the remote cord and diffuser.

Peter...

Given your stated budget constraints, I would suggest either the Olympus FL-36 (original or 'R'), the Nissin Di466, or the Metz 44 AF-1.

If you are not concerned with off camera TTL flash, the original FL-36 can be had pretty cheap -- you can find a clean used one on Ebay right now for about $100.

It's also tiny, and can tilt back for bounce. I love mine.
