GX7 with Oly 75 f1.8 in low light.

Does anyone use an Oly 75mm 1.8 with their GX7 in low light.

This lens is a bit heavier than the Oly 45 and Panny 25 and wondering if the GX7's IBIS is up to the task in very low light.

I am sure it would be (at least for many people) as my much heavier Canon FD 85 1.2 L is ok .

Do have the 45 and 75 but use them with OM-Ds, not a GX7. Still, I think you can safely assume you can hand-hold the 75 at a one stop faster shutter speed than you can the 45. e.g., if you can shoot the 45 at 1/15, then you'll be able to shoot the 75 at 1/30.

It's a hefty lens but still compact, so I don't think you'll find the weight a problem at all. Definitely a lens worth owning!

Cheers,

Rick

Yes and yes. The 75 only sits in my GX-7 bag - I think it is a perfect pairing.

Yes. I use it for theatre productions to get close in and I have no complaints and haven't noticed any shots blurred due to IBIS failure. My only failed shots are when some idiot lighting tech, when told not to use fluorescent or arc lighting for the photo sets, decides to use fluorescent or arc lighting for the photo sets - rendering eShutter less useful.

Now you just need to judge am I good enough to have a useful opinion for you or am I pleased by any old body/lens combo and my opinion is useless :).

The reason I was asking is that I recent used my 12-35 f2.8 and I was having an issue with blurred shots.  Admittedly, I was holding the camera with one hand over my head.  Then I switched to the Oly 45 and most every photo was tack sharp.  Obviously the 45 is much lighter and faster but I had some concerns about using a 305 g lens (the 12-35 is also about 305g) with the IBIS.

I'd think the heavier lens may help - more inertia to the body - less for IBIS to do.

I do find that even with the 12-35/2.8 the shutter speed in Aperture-Pri is still set to quite optimistic values - made worse if intelligent auto ISO is set - an issue I don't get with the Oly lenses I have. The reason I can't speculate as there is now so much computation of variable parameters going on in modern cameras that it would just be speculation.

I definitely use Shutter Pri almost exclusively  in lowish light because of this.

I never go anywhere with the GX7 without having the 75mm with me. I stopped carrying long zooms, preferring to shoot at 75mm and crop. It's a great camera & lens combo for me, and is very useful for shooting indoors with low light from a distance (e.g. concert, orchestra, ballet, etc.)

To compensate for what would otherwise become blur, I crank up the ISO more than I normally feel comfortable doing. At a distance, I'm comfortable shooting the 75mm wide open (since the depth of field is considerable enough at a distance to get the necessary elements of the photo into focus).

I assume this lens is as magical as people claim, but I'm not really a good enough photographer for it to make that great of a difference. I just know that I enjoy it, in much the same way that I liked the original Pany 45mm (the tack-sharp macro). It's a more expensive lens, and with the hood on (I always keep it on), it is quite large -- those are the only two down-sides. I think it balances well on the GX7, and I do occasionally even shoot it 1-handed, but only with more available light.

I love that last shot. It's also a good example of the effectiveness of the IBIS with this lens.

Thanks.  One more similar shot at 1/15.  I started shooting earlier at 125 ISO and didn't  change it for a while, but about this time others were coming out blurred, so I soon bumped the ISO.  It does show what is possible, though.
