Do you own this grip?

If so does it provide a good hand position, most reviews of the Panasonic grip feel it's too close to the camera body edge for the best grip?

Kirk

Yes, I do own this grip and like it very much. It helps quite a bit, but can't compare it with the other options out there (i.e. Panasonic, Sunwayfoto and Richard Franiec). I've had a Franiec grip on another camera, and I can imagine it's nicely done, but having some added height does make bigger lenses work better. I posted some other pictures and some impressions of this grip on this forum a couple weeks ago. Search for "Hoson" and you should find it.

Also, I find the Panny 45-150 (slightly smaller than the excellent Oly 40-150) a bit unhandy on the GM1, just a bit too big.

Great little handful with the 12-32, of course.

Cheers, geoff

I hear ya Geoff. I thought I'd really not like the LCD but considering the E-M10 will take care of the 'viewfinder issue', the GM1's lack of VF is a compromise I can live with. And like I said, it actually assists in a lot of situations because the AF is so fast. But in bright, snow it can be hard to see from some angles.

For those of you that own the GM1 the one issue commented on the most in reviews is the rear control dial and how hard it is to turn without also pressing it down which causes an adjustment to a different setting.

What is your experience with the rear dial?

Thanks,

Kirk

I agree that the rear dial is a pain for that exact reason.

It doesn't matter how small that body is, with ANY lens, as it's still too fat to but in a pants pocket with any lens, so what's the point? You're still carrying the same bag you'd have to carry an em-5 in.

I carry my GM1 with the 12-32mm lens in my front pants pocket, no problem. It bulges a bit (lol) but it perfectly fine and comfortable. I"m not a big guy so I don't have huge pants. True it gets a little tight in jeans but in other pants, no problem.

Good to know, obviously you still like the camera and find it viable even with that issue...

I also like the GM1 despite the rear dial. Some of the problems (most of them?) are related to operator error - pressing the set button when it is not required; accidentally over reaching and invoking the touch screen when operating the wheel or simply when gripping.I find the latter particularly bad in playback where the delete and multiple view screen icons are badly placed close to the "left arrow" key.

Turning off some of the touch screen functions helps a little but I also kind of like the added functionally of the touch screen.

So may cameras have these dial issues, they need better QC in design phase.  The G6 I had also had a rear dial issue that others reported as well, it was so stiff to turn you would end up pushing it in which changed the function.  So far on my new GX7 I find both front/rear dials to work well without these issues.

I'm going to get the GM1, even with a few issues most of the feedback is good and it will be a good match for my GX7 and the prime lenses I have.  I'm not that interested in this moment in the 12-32mm and the package includes LR5.  If I sell both of those the camera body will only cost me $300 so it's worth it at that price to give this camera a try.
