If you are going to Purchase a Canon EF-S 17-55mm F/2.8 IS Lens for video, try to get a recent one (perhaps 2012/2013/2014) because the I.S. Image Stabilization appears to be much quieter than on earlier ones. I believe Canon has incorporated internal revisions to accomplish this. I have a 17-55mm (purchased 11-2013) and side by side with a friend's (he thinks 2010/2011) mine is much quieter.

With the internal mic set to AUTO on a Canon 70D, my 17-55mm does not pick up the sound of the IS whether I am talking or silent. On my friends' even when he is talking you can subtly, but constantly hear the IS motor churning like a far off swarm of bees in the background.

Huh, I have a 17-55mm f2.8 IS that I purchased way back in June of 2006 (one of the first ones), and it is extremely quiet.  Maybe I should compare it to a newer one.  On the other hand, my Canon 300mm f4.0L IS lens has fairly loud image stabilization.

My state of confusion has turned into a circle of confusion.
