Question about Remote Viewfinder Pro use with NX30

I'm a very happy NX200 owner who will be travelling to Europe in a month or so. I made a commitment to myself to upgrade to a NX30, well before planning the European visit. Since I like to shoot time exposures, tripod mounted, my choice with the NX200 has been to use the self-timer to avoid camera movement. It appears that the NX30 interface with the Remote Viewfinder Pro (RVP) app may be a better solution than self-timer. My question is about how well the RVP interfaces with the NX30, what are the limitations of RVP, and has anyone used RVP with the Samsung S3 smartphone? If this is too much for discussion, could you point me to a good resource? Finally, what is the effective usable range from camera to phone?

As an FYI, the European trip is a 15 day river cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam. I know we will be herded around like cattle, but I hope to find some moments where I'll be able to do some creative photography. I've been researching the trip via YouTube and Vimeo, so I kind of know what I'm getting into. I'm a bit surprised at how poor most of the photography/travel video is on those sites (there are some notable exceptions). My wife and I are excited about the trip and hoping, for us, and the people along the river, that the water levels stay well below last years' flood levels.

Thanks for any help or advice about the NX30/RVP questions.

Re: Question about Remote Viewfinder Pro use with NX30

I have recently bought the NX30 and also have an S3 smart phone. I downloaded Samsung's remote viewfinder but it says not compatible with the camera. I couldn't find the Pro version - is there one?

Samsung apps seem clunky at the least!

Is this the APP you are looking for?

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.samsungimaging.connectionmanager

This is what I use for remote control of my NX1100 (but can only work with JPG output).

Can't speak for NX30 or the app you refer to.

Re: Question about Remote Viewfinder Pro use with NX30

I have that one but it doesn't work with raw files, the pro version does. It is mentioned on other postings in the forum but I cannot find where to download it at all???

Not mentioned on the Samsung site either.

Re: Question about Remote Viewfinder Pro use with NX30

You need to download the Samsung Smart app from the Play store. It acts as a remote control for the NX30.

Re: Question about Remote Viewfinder Pro use with NX30

the apps in google play called remote viewfinder are for the first generation WLAN cameras only (eg the GC100, NX20, early WB's)

Since NX1100 up to today the mentioned smart camera app does the job all the types of duties

Sometime the provided documentation does get youa hint on what to do

page 140ff

You should install Samsung SMART CAMERA App on your phone or device

before using this feature. You can download the application from Samsung

Apps or the Google Play Store. Samsung SMART CAMERA App is compatible

with Samsung camera models manufactured in 2013 or later.

Re: Question about Remote Viewfinder Pro use with NX30

I was under the impression that Remote Viewfinder Pro was installed on the camera by Samsung as part of its package of apps. I added Remote Viewfinder (not RV Pro) to my S3 via the Samsung App Store (but I'm not sure if it's even necessary). I'll be ordering the NX30 in a couple of days, hopefully, I'll have a better answer after it arrives.

Hi. I own the NX30 and, as I said earlier, you need to download the Samsung Smart app to remotely control the camera.

to make clear how that things works:

On any Smartphone you do install (as indicated in the user documentation.. have you read it ?  ) the Smart Camera App which handles ALL comms betrween the phone and the camera that is initiated by the Camera (!) as the Link and the viewfinder

The APP on the smartphone is always the same for any NX post NX1100 and the camera firmware decides if you get PRO or normal.

There is no app called remote viewfinder pro as such.

The reason why sou still find apps on google play is as explained because with the older first and second generation cameras you had to install an app per used featurd.

Re: Question about Remote Viewfinder Pro use with NX30

This video is what led to my confusion. On YouTube, do a search for: NX30 Remote Viewfinder - Samsung CES 2014

The demonstration shows the app on the camera, but doesn't describe how it got there. I assumed it was part of the installed feature set on the camera. I totally "get" how you install apps on the phone.

All sorted now. As stated before you need the Smart Camera App and when that is installed and paired to the NX30 you get the 'Pro' features. Works well and with raw files.

The app is already on the camera in the firmware.

I don't know the date of your trip, but at this moment the water level that was more high in winter (as usual, but not to extreme values at all) is lowering to normal values for the time of the year.
Normal for spring / summer, means "low" level (you can walk at the sides of the river between the "winter dikes" ). I don't foresee much troubles in the near future at all.

Thanks, Leon. Gear list is almost complete (including rain covering for camera). Hoping to have the NX30 in my hands by this time next week. Our trip is scheduled for late May. I tend to shoot using a tripod mounted camera, so I'm a bit worried about some of the locations (churches, etc). Will make do, as necessary. Really have fingers crossed that we get some time to shoot early a.m., evening, night stuff.

Re: Question about Remote Viewfinder Pro use with NX30

I too ordered an NX30. Has to arrive also.
Late May seems a good time for travelling in Europe. It can be nice weather, but also a bit chilly (at least in Holland where I live). For the time of the year it is nice weather at this moment. (About 19-20 degree Celsius). End of the trip Amsterdam, nice old fashioned city with their typical "small" houses, with over 1200 bridges by all the canals. A very diverse city with about 180 nationalities. But be very cautious for pickpockets. They are working in "groups". One talking to you and "asking", trying to deduce you, another guy taking your hand luggage or camera bag.

As for using a tripod. Me myself usually make use of a monopod. Much more easy taking it with me, and mostly just stable enough to take some shots in more bad light conditions. Also it has a "deterrence" to pickpockets as it is looking more or less as a "police baton"

It seems to work fine I briefly tested it on my wife's iPhone 5s no issues.
