Samsung nx2000 vs Samsung nx 1100
1

My dad asked me to buy him a small camera in the 300\400 $ range with good image quality, he does not understands much about cameras, but he wants a camera that takes good quality pictures, so I´m looking at apsc sensor size cameras for that price range. The cameras with the size and price range I´m looking at are the samsung nx2000, samsung nx1100, sony nex3.

I personally prefer the the manual controls on the nx1100, rather then the nx2000 which seems all done through touchscreen, but my dad will probably use it as a point and  shoot and use auto mode 24/7 so thats not a dealbreaker for the nx2000.

My question is which samsung camera (nx2000, nx1100) do you guys think have the edge autofocus speed, Jpeg quality and video, and does the kit lens have stabilization ?

Thank you.

Image quality and AF will be the same . I`d personally not touch an NX2000 with a barge pole , they changed the proper SD card slot for fiddly Micro SD cards and replaced the buttons with the touch screen , both massive downers IMO . Touchscreens are OK when you can 1:- turn them off (as in NX30 / Panny series, Hopefully the NX300) 2:- aren`t likely to get in the way with usiing the cam such as accidently moving the focus point or pressing something when handing the cam (I`d hate to handle the 2000 with a bigger lens, the EOS-M is a nightmare) and 3:- you can use the cam without it . I Can see the NX2000 failing all three of those ..

I`d suggest getting an NX1100 while you can unless you love touchscreen interfaces , inserting memory cards with tweezers and aren`t going to get a lens bigger than the 20-50 .

Sorry I'm not going to answer your question directly, but that's because I've been in a very similar situation to you in choosing a camera for my wife.

She used to get so upset that the quality of photos from the cameras I used (at the time was Pentax K100D, Samsung GX-10 and Samsung NX100) were so much better than hers (a old Kodak 4mp point and shoot camera). She had also tried my Panasonic TZ7 for a whle but said it was too slow to respond when she wanted to get photos of something moving.

I therefore went and got another NX100 and added the 50-200mm lens so she would have the range she wanted and had got used to from the TZ7.

You know what - she's used that NX100 about twice. All the rest of the time she still uses the TZ7 because even though I setup the NX100 on full auto everything she couldn't get on with having to manually zoom and still couldn't get the quality of photos she expected the camera to produce.

I did try and explain that getting quality photos was not just about the camera....

I now have the NX1100 and so in part my answer to you original question is that it really can produce some excellent quality photos, but I don't use the Kit lens - I mainly use the 16mm F2.4 and the 30mm F2 which in my opinion are better than all the other lenses I have on my other DSLR type cameras and at a fraction of the price. But I just can't imagine a typical point and shoot user getting on with fixed focal length lenses.

If your father is just going to use it as a point and shoot - is he also going to shoot JPEG? as he really won't get the best out of the Samsung NX cameras if he is.

Me - if I were to choose another camera for someone who wants auto everything - I reckon I would go for the newly announced Panasonic TZ60 which now also does RAW and has a bulit-in EVF to avoid problems with sunlit live-view screens. I'm sure it can't match the quality of APS-C RAW files from the like of the NX range, but I'm sure it would get used.

I wouldn't go with Samsung if relying on jpg quality unless you have samsung lenses yourself

If you can wait and portability is a factor, maybe the NX mini is a better option even

You can get the NX300 for ~450$ with the 45mm lens nowadays, which IMO would be a worthwile investment

you might want to buy the 16-50mm PZ as a general use lens later, but that makes the total investment a lot more... than maybe a 50-200mm... All together its close to the 1000$ range lol

now that I think about it it's probably better to get the nx300 with an 18-55mm or even 20-50 just for general use

Re: Samsung nx2000 vs Samsung nx 1100

I tried a nx300 in a store in I really liked it, but the price was 500 euros vs the 230 euros of the nx1100, I live in a small island so I don´t have many stores to choose from.  So I´m more inclined for the nx1100 , seems the kit lens does not have os but for what it offers 300$ seems a really nice price what it offers.

That seems like a good deal, especially considering lightroom comes with it

The 20-50 has no OS but optically it`s a stunner, actually better at 20mm F3.5 than the 20mm F2.8 PRIME is at F3.5 !! and better than the 18-55 (at least the plastic mount versions I`ve used) .. the 20-50 when collapsed is small too . My NX20 looks weired with a white 20-50 on but it makes the camera as coat pocketable as an NX300 or 1100 .

If he wants a small camera then I would just get a compact camera. He'd probably be more than happy with an rx100. He will never change lenses and probably wants something to easily carry.

If you are set on mirrorless then maybe nxf1... Still early on that. Gm1 but that is pricy. Nikon j3 possibly.

RX100 costs too much. NXF1 is also more expensive at the moment. And why somebody would want Nikon J3 if there is a possibility to get a 20mp APS-C for the same money?

Faster AF and operations? Greater DOF that will make it easier to take sharp pictures?

Re: Samsung nx2000 vs Samsung nx 1100

Still I think an older gentleman wanting a small camera simply wants a small compact camera. He won't want to deal with lenses. Find the best compact for your money. Rx100 is more in the 500 range. There are others that are decent. Not as good as mirrorless but perhaps good enough for him. Perhaps he wants a superzoom or something like that. If he seems into photography and iq then consider mirrorless. I mentioned a j3 because it is pretty small... But still I think he'd prefer a true compact. My two cents. Usability is a bigger factor than iq for most older folks.
