God will be cut...

These are the subjective impressions of a proud owner of a lens.. not a MTF discussion.

I got the lens second hand after thinking that I really don't need a macro lens, and the $450 I paid for it could go to a bunch of other more helpful things. Well, I was wrong.

This is the sharpest lens I've eve had the pleasure of working with. I have some nice L lenses but this one is probably as sharp as it gets. To quote Hattori Hanzo in Kill Bill, " I can tell you with no ego, this is my finest sword. If on your journey, you should encounter God, God will be cut". This is how sharp this thing it.

The lens was purchased as a 90% portrait and 10% macro, well, that WAS the plan. Over the weekend I found out that I LOVE shooting macro, and portraits took a second chair.

All shots were made on a 6D full frame, so maximum resolution requirements. Images processed by DXO Optics Pro.

Bottom line:

Pro's

1. Sharp

2. Fast and silent focus

3. focus limiting switch to help lens with focus hunting

4. Beautiful clean bokeh

5. Good focusing distance - could get close enough to a bee...

Cons

1. focus hunting - could be better, though when zooming from macro 1:1 to infinity it should take some time...

2. does not zoom

Some shots, both macro and not, ALL SHOT HANDHELD. I do not use a tripod, I do not pose people/plants/animals so what you see is what was there...

Right, I've fallen in love with macro with this as well.  Although the L version is supposed to be a bit sharper and has IS, I haven't seen the need to upgrade to it.  This thing is certainly hand-holdable in sunlight or with flash, with good results.

Put a Raynox DCR-250 (IIRC that's the model number) extender on the end, and you get 2.5X magnification.  I have photos of a single blueberry that fill the entire frame.  Kind of neat.

If it's a *Single* Lens Reflex, why do I need so many lenses?

Re: God will be cut...

Jacobl,

Thanks for the review.  And the quote, God will be cut ...   I will have to file that one away.  I have been considering buying a new macro for some time, and will give this lens consideration.  For now I am using an old Tamron film era Macro lens on my 7D with a Fotodiox FD to EOS adapter. Works OK but focus is manual.

NICE Kill Bill reference! I knew what you were referencing instantly!

That IS a nice lens. I had it and traded it in on the one that replaced it - the 100 f2.8 L IS - and I almost regretted it - there was an improvement, and the IS is nice to have, but the original was pretty good! It didn't quite justify the pretty expensive upgrade to me.

Since you're now a Macro Addict - have you tried macro flash yet? I have the Canon 24EX and it's pretty cool.

Great pics!  I inherited the same lens for my T3i and absolutely love it!  It's super sharp and I've also only shot hand held.  I've paired it up a few times with my Kenko DigiPlus Pro 300 DGX 1.4x TC and didn't lose any sharpness.

I will be taking this lens with me to Yellowstone in June to get some macros of those amazing wildflowers, and maybe some wildlife shots.  Love this lens!

Yes, it's very sharp

I've never seen the need to upgrade to the L. It'll do me. Then again, I don't do macro very often. And I find I almost always need a tripod with this baby.
