Azure Kingfishers and some other stuff

A couple of azure kingfishers have returned to our local billabong. Unfortunately it is difficult to get a clear shot of them due a lot of overhanging branches and leaves, In addition the light is poor and the coming from the wrong direction.

Anyway took a few handheld shots with the new 0 antishock setting and IS1 enabled. Shutter speeds were only between 60 and 80 seconds.

Captured the pair of them together but they were too far way for a good quality image.

This one is better due to being a lot closer but still  under the shade and backlit.

Same as above

Yellow faced Honeyeater. This fellow perched right in front of me and whilst ithe lighting looks okay it was again backlit and I was shooting at ISO 1600 and still only got  a SS of 60sec. But I was pleased with the detail  achieved.

The following images were from another day.

Little Pied Cormorant

Willy Wag Tail

All taken with E-M1 and 50-200mm SWD + EC2.0

Cheers

Dennis

A Pheasant Surprise

Did a double-take while driving down the road when I spotted this guy standing on the snowbank!  Backed up, rolled down the window, and he stuck around long enough for these.  Too bad he wouldn't turn to face me, but he was pretty suspicious.  E-M1 and 75-300, comments and criticism always appreciated.

Re: Great Horned Owl Dudley

Thought the group might enjoy this photo of a Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus) taken at the Carolina Raptor Center on Photographer's day. It's a great event for photographers and the proceeds go to help save raptors.

Shot taken with an old Sony A77 and Sigma 120-400mm lens.

Yes, pretty unusual.....

....for up here.  To my knowledge, Pheasants have never been stocked in this are (northern Maine).  There are some folks who raise them, and this guy may have been an escapee.  Some of these captive birds might be provided to some of the hunting lodges in the area too, and he may have slipped away.  Its been a rough winter and he looks to be in great shape though, so perhaps he just got out of a pen recently.

Re: Great Horned Owl Dudley

Your 'old' A77 sure did the trick!  He's a very handsome subject too.  What a great idea for the refuge to raise funds.

Re: Black-crowned Night Herons

Nice series, Richard.  I particularly like the last one, for the birds shape in flight, and that he looks so proud of his 'prize'!

Re: When Tree Swallows come, the spring is here

Nice!  Those little guys are fast, you did a great job.  They won't be here for probably another month, I'm hoping to attract some with a condo-type house I put up last year.

Re: Mergansers

Beautiful ducks, dharma.  I look forward to seeing them in the brook out back each spring.  Too bad they don't stick around, usually only see them for a week or so.

Re: From South Florida

Very nice!  Breeding/nesting season is a busy time for these guys.  I'm getting more and more confident with the E-M1 75/300 combo, especially since the firmware update.
