X-M1 and X-A1 Complaints and 5 Firmware upgrade requests.

I love that little camera. Stunning image quality. Incredible white balance. Very compact Nice articulated display. Very practical manual focus implementation. Etc.

But I hate a few things and I'd love Fuji to issue a new firmware that would "make us keep our cameras longer". Here we go:

- - 1. Allow us to disable the annoying yellow "camera shake" warning. I know the camera can shake, I'm shooting in utter darkness and your stupid yellow thing is sticking out like a spotlight!

- - 2.a Shutter Lag with the remote RR-90. Arggggggh! 3/4 of a second with the remote. The lens is prefocused in manual mode. The exposure is manual too. Everything should be lightning fast. And when I press the remote's shutter button, I have to wait 750 millisecond for the camera to fire. Unacceptable!!!

Why is this remote so complicated? Two wires instead of three and an intricated circuit of resistors and diode to detect the state of the three positions button (see online schematics somewhere) Stop that nonsense! Make it quick, make it simple (and keep it electrical!)

- - 2.b Don't disable the camera's shutter button when the remote is plugged. I still want to review my picture on the back of the camera, and pressing the shutter is the easiest way to go back to the shooting mode.

- - 3. When I remove a fuji lens, it should go into manual focus mode immediately. If I put another Fuji lens, return to AF mode. Otherwise, the lens I am going to use will focus manually. All non fuji do. Right now I use the FN button to make that switch. It's annoying to lose the sole FN button to do something that the camera could do for me. I'd much rather keep the FN button for "focus with the back button (instant AF) when I use a Fuji lens. And whenever a Fuji lens is used again, it should revert to AF or (selectable menu option) to the state it was in the last time a Fuji lens was used : manual focus or AF.

- - 4. Don't display the distance scale when you have no information to show on it. When shooting with non-Fuji lens, just don't display it. There is a scale on the lens. I'll use that.

I shoot in very very low light with no camera info on the display, which allow me to see something on the screen set to maximum luminosity, but when I press the focus magnifier wheel, this annoying useless blue bar blinds me with its light, and there is really no reason for it to be there : the camera doesn't know the distance!

- - 5. DON'T DISABLE THE HOT SHOE. Leave it on AT ALL TIMES. What's you business of cutting off the hot shoe signal when I want to take burst shots? Or film simulation braketing? Or any kind of braketing? This is really bad manners! Leave it working at all times. When my manual flashes are set to low power, they will flash 5 or 6 times in less than a second before becoming too weak. I love them. Don't mess with my flash photography.

If you agree with any of these request, please click like. I'd really love Fuji to get the message on how to get these details right.

What's your pet peeve? What would you like to see improved? There's a good chance that the Fuji scouts will read this thread, so go ahead and speak your mind!

I agree with those and would add a few more:

Exposure bracketing
At least allow bracketing in 2EV increments, and preferably allow bracketing up to 7 images.

Image review with RAW
RAW files can't be reviewed closely because the embedded JPEG is reduced size. Either record full size JPEG previews in the RAW files or don't embed JPEG previews when set to shoot RAW+JPEG.
Or use the same system as the S5 Pro, where with image review after shot turned on, you can view the full size image from the buffer. I'd prefer either of the first two options though.

Rear curtain flash sync with non Fuji flashes
I realise that this can be tricky with non-communicating flashes since the camera can't tell how long the flash duration will be. But I'm pretty sure something like trigger the flash 2ms before the shutter closes would be fine with most flashes.

Manual flash
Allow setting the power of the built-in flash manually, so no pre-flash is fired.

All these, and I'd also like to see improvemnts to the AF assist lamp. I often find it activates fairly randomly. Sometimes it activates in low light (good) sometimes in good light (not needed) and sometimes it fails to activate in low light (when I need it). I'd like to see something like: if the AF fails to lock and focus is retried within 3 seconds, the AF lamp automatically activates.

I don't have this problem, the lag with my RR-90 is the same as using the on camera shutter button in all modes (AF, MF, manual exposure, auto exposure etc)

I bought my RR-90 a feew months ago for about £30 from fujifilms online UK shop. for the build quality I thought that price was a bit too high, however I noticed a few weeks ago the price is now £99. The only explanations I can think of are either a recent (unanounced?) redesign, or the put the price up to coincide with the release of the X-T1

Yes, very disappointing.

I don't think they tought of that one for very long before taking that decision.

That makes sense. Maybe the contrast of the scene play a part in the algorithm?

There is not that many power users of the x-m1 or x-a1 on this forum, if I understand correctly the lack of reaction...

I'm a bit sad to report that the lag also applies to the normal shutter button. I can press it and remove my hand from the camera before the picture is taken. I never noticed that it was that bad before because I always shoot from the half pressed position, where the lag is barely noticeable.

My remote is setup to trigger only, no half press, but unfortunately the camera performs some kind of time loosing activity before firing. I suspect it is doing the regular AF routine and then realise that it wasn't needed, so goes on to the exposure metering, and then realise that it wasn't needed either, and then fire.

New firmware is out.  I hope it improves auto white balance.  I am disappointed with the auto white balance with my Fuji X-M1.

The "Disable hot shoe for continuous shots" is also a disappointing "feature".  I hope more people complain about this so Fuji would make their cameras more "Strobist friendly."

Add to that list

There's only one programmable button and one custom setting on the mode dial, so provide options to repurpose other buttons:

Make the WB button programmable

I shoot Raw + JPEG, so if I have a WB problem, I can fix it later. I hate changing setting, because inevitably, I forget to change them back!

Permit repurposing of the movie button

For those who'll never use it for movies during their ownership of the camera.

Make the Movie Mode more flexible.

For those who actually want to use it Give us focus peaking and zebras, allow use of DR Auto, let us change the aperture while recording, improve focusing speed when switching back and forth between points (focus racking), enable zoom for manual focusing, etc., etc.

Set the Macro button to Instant AF when AF is set to manual mode and an AF lens is attached. Have another programmable option for manual AF lenses.

Allow the dedicated scene modes on the mode dial (action/landscape/portrait) to be used to hold custom settings.

The modes are useless, even for a beginner. For example, if you set the portrait position, face detection isn't turned on automatically! At any rate, these modes are in the Advanced SR Auto menu already.

When using the SR+ and Adv. positions on the mode dial, allow the user to select a new option from the Q menu.

Okay, I don't really use these modes much, but might be inclined to experiment a bit if it were easy to set a new option without having to turn the dial away and then back to select a new option.

Add metering mode and flash compensation options to the Q menu.

Currently, we have to drill through menus to set these options. Are you kidding me?

Provide a quick access MyMenu option to the camera.

I appreciate that the Q menu can get overloaded, so let me store some setting that I use most for quick access.

Add "missing" film simulation modes

You know, the ones you left out from the higher end cameras. Very stingy of you Fuji to drop these.

Provide some kind of panorama assist mode

Okay, you did not provide the orientation sensor that allows motion panorama and an electronic level to be included. So can you provide some kind of assistance for panoramas, like an edge overlay or something?

The following aren't specific to the X-A1/M1, but to Fuji X cameras in general:

Allow AF point selection to override face detection disabling the AF point selector button.

Not only is your face detection not 100% foolproof, but it's tedious if I've just taken a portrait shot and want to capture something else off center.

Allow spot metering to follow AF point selection.

Your implementation of spot metering is among the dumbest on the planet.

That's in the silent mode. Want the hot shoe on, don't disable the silent mode, just turn off the sound.

I. Love it too. Dismissed by so many,  but a great camera. Here are my wishes:

- - 1.  Electronic level. If possible,  of course.

- - 2.  Yellow focus peaking.  If you have ever used a NEX, you know how much more visible it is than any other colors.

- - 3. Change the camera icon in Quick menu.  Now it's a camera.  Make it changeable to a movie icon,  then let me assign a custom function to the movie button.  Or at least more custom settings with that icon.

You may not have correctly understood what we are talking about here. The hot shoe is indeed disabled in any of the braketing modes or continuous shooting modes. Try to use a pocket wizard or any hotshoe flash in anything but single shot drive mode and you will be sorely disapointed. The silent mode is something else.

I love and am amazed by the white balance of the X-A1. It may be different from the X-M1, I don't know...

Couldn't agree more. Well, on second thoughts, yes I could. There has to be some market segmentation if they are to sell the higher priced cameras...

Re: X-M1 and X-A1 Complaints and 5 Firmware upgrade requests.

I like my X-A1's SOOC JPEGs but I don't like using the built-in RAW converter. After making a JPEG, it just leaves you there instead of taking you back to the original RAF to make more versions. So if I have 20 RAFs for example, and I create a JPEG from the first one and want to make more JPEG versions of that first RAF, I have to click the left arrow key 20 times to get back there.

From Fujifilm's firmware update notes for the X-E1 and X-E2:

"Improvement of RAW file conversion function

When developing RAF images in-camera using the built-in RAW file converter, the firmware upgrade improves the flow by taking you back to the original RAF image once the conversion has been done, whereas before it left you with the converted JPG file on screen and the user had to go back to the next RAF file manually."

Fulifilm, please give us X-M1 and X-A1 users the same capabilities. Thanks.

The X-M1 and X-A1 are already handicapped by not having an EVF, or even the option for adding an external EVF. Omitting the film simulation modes is just being churlish, IMO. Fujifulm could have easily included them in the X-M1 and X-A1 without negatively affecting sales of the higher priced X cameras at all.

Yes, that is a major PITA, especially when you have 1000 pictures of an event and need to scroll through hundred's of them to return to the RAF. As you say, they already fixed it for the other models, so it couldn't be that hard to fix!
