NX1100 sensor failure or ??
1

My Nx1100 is about 6 months old and has been great up to this weekend.  I experienced an abnormality I am not sure is an early camera failure, or just some sort of glitch.

My wife and I were placing flags at the graves of Confederate veterans (an annual event in preparation for Memorial Day). As you might imagine, many of the gravestones are quite weathered and/or damaged.  I take photos of the gravestones as one can often read the information better by enlargement later, and to post them online so that descendants of these men and women can find their final resting place.

I use the standard flash to provide fill flash and to illuminate the stone face if I find myself in a backlit situation. (One can't ask the stone to turn around and face the sun. :-))  I had the camera on Program, and was using the 30 mm pancake lens.

After working just fine for several hours, I suddenly began to have shots with substantial horizontal magenta lines across it, and then shots with a heavy green color shift (but no lines). I had to turn the camera off, and on again to clear the effect.  This happened twice yesterday, and once today. In each case I was using the flash on a pretty bright day, but don't see why this should be an issue.

The failure looks just like what happened with a Canon Elph I had. It ended up being sensor failure that was repaired by Canon for free. In that case a restart wouldn't help - in this case it does.

Something I'm doing, or should I contact Samsung do you think?  Anyone else with this issue?  Great camera otherwise and the lens is super.

does this happen only after camera becomes quite hot after some shooting?

I'll post a couple of examples when I'm next online. I don't have the files here at the moment

Re: NX1100 sensor failure or ??

The first I'd been shooting awhile, but the second day it happened after only a few shots and on a cool and windy day. I'm thinking heat isn't the issue, but maybe I'm wrong - I was using the flash each time, so maybe the battery draw was enough to get things warm...

Re: Examples? (NT)

Here are some examples plus a shot taken at the same session.

First sign of trouble... the only magenta shot. Taken after 45 mins or so of shooting.

Then six or so of these much too green shots....

After a camera power cycle... back to good again..

Re: Examples?

My guess is: The sensor got to hot.

But depends if this also appears directly after a longer pause, its just a guess.

did you have fill flash in the last image at 1/320 ?

Re: Examples?

No fill flash on the last shot.

I tried today to replicate the failure, and couldn't do so. Left the camera in the car this morning as it was warm, but not hot enough to be of concern (80 or so F). Fired off 30 or so photos with fill flash over a couple of minutes, and then did it again five minutes later.

Just boring shots...but otherwise ok.

Both days we had problems were a bit cooler (60's) and quite windy.  Hmmm.

Weirdly enough I happened to receive a 15 year service award at work today, and among an otherwise uninteresting (to me) award items was an Olympus VR 370 point and shoot.

I went for it as there was nothing else, but also to have at least something with me on an upcoming trip IF I have to send the NX in for service.  Plus I figured it might be good to have as a very portable pocket camera anyhow.

We'll see what it's like when it arrives, but I don't expect it will preform with the NX...
