NX300 - New 30mm / f2.0 Pancake Lens
1

Just purchased the new 30mm Pancake lens.  Here are few my shots from my past couple times out with the camera. I love this lens and has really been taking over as my primary every day lens. I only have the 18-55mm lens that came with the camera, but I find myself using this lens now 75% of the time.  Tell me what you think? and any other recommendations on my next lens purchase?  Thanks,

?  I don't think I would consider the 30mm new by now.

Yeah, I only use the 18-55 for wide shots, since I haven't purchased anything wider.  The 12-24 is kinda pricey, and I hear the 16 isn't all that great and it costs more than the 30 did... and is a slower lens, so I haven't gone for that either.  The fisheye is fairly specialised, and also a slow lens, though it is supposed to be fairly good at what it does, but a fisheye just isn't for me right now.

Tell me what you think? and any other recommendations on my next lens purchase? Thanks,

Telling us a bit more about how or what you like to shoot would help with us give a recommendation.

I think the glass in the background is a little distracting here, the leading lines dray me to the empty pair of shoes.  Maybe just shoot from a little higher and little more left on this one?

Hmm, maybe turn the lovely lady a little bit more towards the light in this one, or a little more away and expose for the face if you're going for a bit of rim lighting.  Could you have moved (both you and the model together) further back?  I don't think I really like this composition but I'm not really seeing a good one at this distance with this focal length.

This one I like, maybe include the edges of her head or crop in a little tighter to remove the gap in the upper right corner, hmm, no never mind, that would end up chopping off too much I think.  A very nice shot though, I like the light on the lady, a little more on the butterfly (or moth?) would be nice.  I think it would also work a little better without the people in the background, but I'm sure the insect doesn't afford us al the time in the world we would like to adjust the tiny things, I like this shot quite a lot overall.

Good use of depth of field here, I don't think I really have any criticisms on this one except maybe to move have the subject a little more to the right side of the frame.

This one is an instant winner, great use of depth of field, the background is also interesting and I feel like this shot tells a bit of a story.

Not a fan on this shot, I feel like it should be tighter or wider, or vertical.  Maybe a portrait orientation here capturing the full reflection of that tower?  Or is the water not actually that wide enough?

All of this is just my opinions, so don't worry if you don't agree with me, it's all subjective after all.

Re: NX300 - New 30mm / f2.0 Pancake Lens

Thanks for the feedback, trust me I love to hear all people's opinions its better than my friend's "thats an awesome picture" comment when photographers see pictures in a different way. So thank you on that aspect. I am very new to photography. This is actually my first camera I ever purchased in my 33 years of life. I welcome anything that can help me grow and make my shots better. Also, sorry for the term New 30mm, I didnt mean the lens was new I guess what I meant to say was it was new to me, since I just recieved it.

Nice real world images. The 30mm is my favorite walk around lens too. It just does it. IF you are into portraits and the like I would highly recommend the 45 1.8.

The third, forth and fifth photos are really nice; thoughtfully composed with nice colors.
I have the 30mm along with the 20-50 and 50-200 zooms, along with an assortment of old Minolta primes. If I reach for an autofocus lens, it is the 30mm 99.9% of the time. If I am going somewhere where I can only take one lens, this is it every time.

For future purchases, I think the 45mm would auit your style, ansd as similar as the focal lengyhs seem, 45mm and 67-ish (35mm equivalent) are not *that* close. As a longer alternative, I bet you would enjoy the 60 as well...

Re: Can you tell I am replying from a phone...? :-p

Thanks again! I do have my eye on the 45mm pancake. I was hoping to see something in the 12 - 18mm range with low aperture, sometimes the 30mm is to close for things like inside shots, i find myself really backing up and hitting walls, but the 18-55m aperture is to high and doesnt really handle well in low light / inside of resturants or houses.

I am also into toy photography and purchased some Fotga Macro Auto Focus Extension Tubes and will let you know how that goes.  They will not be here for a few weeks.  Here is a shot of one of my toys with the 30mm.

I'll be baaaack

Re: Can you tell I am replying from a phone...? :-p

You would have to manual focus, but there is a new Samyang 12mm f/2 available for NX. It is pre-order now, but would be great for low light. I think it is $400 US.

The Samsung 16mm f/2.4 is also very nice.  It is a bit weak at f/2.4, but fine for say a central subject at close focus distance.

This must be one very expensive toy with all that detail.

All nice pictures, IMO. Is that terminator toy from sideshow collectibles? Really nice.

Re: NX300 - New 30mm / f2.0 Pancake Lens

18-55 is stabilised while the primes aren't. The stabilisation should give you the effect of at least 2 stops slower shutter speed so long as you have a reasonably steady hand, likewise its partner the 50-200. Forget the fact they are 'kit' lens as they are very good. This stabilisation should help compensate for the smaller maximum aperture.

Avoid the 16mm as it's not as good as the 20mm / 30mm unless well stopped down to around f8. Wide open in low light it has 'issues'.

If you can afford it the 12-24 is an excellent lens and really good as a walk around lens left on the camera unless you need something else.

OK, I was looking at these on my phone before and they looked nice.  Now I am on the desktop with Biggie Size monitor, and the 3rd and 4th images are getting me kinda misty...  Wonderful.  I look forward to seeing more!

These are very nice, particularly the two dog images. With the soft focus flowers in the first and the background couple in the second.
