Olympus sp-100ee superzooms compared a day at the shops

Hi all,

I thought I like to share my experience from today comparing super zoom cameras and below is my subjective opinion on comparing these cameras. I went to 2 shops took photos indoors and viewed them on their computer. I took photos of all multicolored textas and in another shop fruit and textas together. Photos were taken close up and approx. 4 m away. I took photos on AUTO setting

Nikon P600: Was the sharpest, brightest and most detailed of the images. I found however the images indoors lacked a little vibrancy but were the cleanest and looked natural. They took the brightest photos indoors Also focusing took a bit of time (slow) especially on video and a bit with photos as well.

Canon sx50: The most vibrant/full color (same as canon sx700), detailed and clean. Good focusing on video and photos. Love the smoothness of the zoom , I am impressed. I liked the colours on the canon but loved the cleanliness of the Nikon P600 photos. Hard choice.

Olympus sp-100: The second most vibrant (behind canon) more vibrant than Nikon P600 , detailed images. Good focusing on both on video and photos, and very smooth operation, but a little more difficult than canon to navigate the menu. However I tried two Olympus and one seemed to take darker photos, it kept going to ISO1600 so the photos were a bit more grainy than the first two above. All other cameras were around ISO 400 or 800. I wasn't sure if it was faulty. The other Olympus in the other shop seem to take cleaner photos and werent as dark, I was impressed.

Olympus colors are vibrant, natural and sharp with good detail. Actually the shop assistant commented it probably had the best contrast in the photos of all cameras.

Canon sx700: I felt the images matched the quality of the sx50 (vibrant, clear, detailed) and it was the best overall video quality of all units tested, very smooth fast focusing on both videos and photos. Probably the best video of all these cameras. I briefly took a couple photos with the sx280, I felt the sx700 was sharper and more detailed.

Nikon P9700: Nice detailed images not as vibrant and clean as the canons. Focusing not as good as the sx700. I like that it has panorama mode but canon dosent.

Nikon L830: Images detailed but a bit flat/dull in color and more grainy at high ISO. Focusing took awhile to on video and photos. Good budget camera

Panasonic F270 (I think) 60 x zoom: It seem to have focusing issues, it took okay photos not very clean photos.

I haven't decided what I get yet as I want to do some tests outdoors and more zoom shots. At least 4 of them I be happy to keep, so hard to choose.

Cheers

Steve.

Re: Olympus sp-100ee superzooms compared a day at the shops

Hi,

Great review.

Like you I'm pondering about which to buy next.

To date the Canon SX50 has bad problems with the skin irritation 're-calls' so that's out for me. I'm waiting to see reviews/photos taken with the SX60?

I had a Panasonic FZ62 which after initial 'menu' problems also sometimes the zoom never returned to zero unless I turned it off then on again so I returned it for a refund. That puts me off any other Panasonic.

Also after researching Fuji, Samsung etc also reportedly with problems I was pleased to see Olympus (I'm using an old 1 now, my previous shorter Zoom before the Pana that I've had for donkeys years without problems & I might add the picture quality is superb, superior to the FZ62, it just lacks decent video. My opinion is that Olympus makes better lenses?

To sum up it simply depends if Olympus 100-EE or Canon SX60 takes better pictures, also of course price because I can't afford a $1000 outfit!

If you get any of your pics published here please let me know.

Thanks

Hi,

I had another look at the cameras. For the ultimate megazooms I felt the Olympus sp-100e didn't quite do as well as the canon sx50 and Nikon P600 for image quality in less good light conditions (overcast, indoors etc). I felt the noise appeared sooner and finer details went a bit more smudgee. It did focus well indoors better than the Nikon p600. Canon would of fixed the skin irritation problems on the sx50 by now. For the 30 x zooms between the canon sx700 and Nikon s9700 I would go with the canon sx700. I think I am now choosing between the canon sx50, Nikon p600 or p530 also waiting for the new canon sx60 before deciding. One more month to go.

Cheers

Looking at side-by-side comparison is much better than relying on rating/award set by bias or incompetent reviewer. Result from IR is not even the optimum as settings on NR and Sharpness may vary as well as condition of the sample used.

Re: Olympus sp-100ee superzooms compared a day at the shops

The problem is that these cameras are not really designed to take pictures of objects indoors. If you are really interested in ISO 1600 pictures in poor light I would start at 1/1.7" at the bare minimum.

These cameras are superzooms for outdoor photography and this sort of test really bears no relation to the use of these cameras unless you are going to take pictures from one end of a 300 yard long room with 3 light bulbs.

Yes an no.  Even in outdoor shots, you have the issue of taking pictures at dusk (or pre-dawn, but I don't tend to be up taking pictures then).

Often times, people turn to super-zooms so they only have one camera to carry, instead of the shoulder bag of doom with 2 bodies and 4 lenses, and so it gets pressed into service taking indoor shots as well.

It may not be the best camera to use in those cases, but if you figure you are eventually going to take pictures in those conditions, it is good to know ahead of time, what kind of images you are going to get.

I'm sorry to "break up the party," but the image comparisons made above are not from the FinePix S1 60x zoom camera at all.

They are from the 26x FUJIFILM X-S1, which has a 2/3” 12 megapixel EXR CMOS sensor, a completely different camera.

Thanks. I just checked and in the heading on the actual page on photographyblog it says this Fujifilm FinePix S1 Review and the specs say its a 50x zoom. Have a look at the review unless I have provided the wrong link.

Steve, I was referring to all the comparison scenes previously posted from Imaging Resource, at http://www.imaging-resource.com/IMCOMP/COMPS01.HTM .

Imaging resource does not have an image from the new 60x FinePix S1. The images shown are from the older, larger-sensor, 26x X-S1 . . . a completely different camera.

Ok, I'm confused since IR shows both the X-S1 and the S1 images. I'm interested in the Oly SP100. My local camera store has the Oly in stock and I did get to snap a few shots with it to my SD cards..looks very promising. The build quality looks/feels good and the EVF is excellent. Wish any shop had the Fuji S1, but it seems they only carry the entry level S2900-4900 ones.

I have tested about 7 cameras in the shops twice now. I found the Olympus sp-100 focused well , nice to hold but its image quality didn't quite match the Nikon p600 or Canon sx50. In the images the Olympus had nice colors, quite sharp but photos seemed slightly nosier and didn't reveal the finer details like the canon or nikon cameras.

Cheers

Steve.
