α6000 & α7R ISO100-6400 JPG+RAW

It's been at least 10 years since I last tried to do any sort of 'test shots', so please pardon me if the setup is not ideal.

I used the FE55/1.8 for all the photos, at f2.8. Both α6000 and α7R were set on a tripod and with 2-sec self timer engaged.

All shots were focused on the Rabbit's left (right on screen, the one nearer the center) eye.

α6000, AF-A, RAW+JPG

α7R, AF-S, RAW+JPG

Both set to Evaluative Metering.

I physically moved the α7R to get in closer to roughly match the framing of the α6000.

Shot at full ISO stops, so, ISO100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200, 6400, 12800 and 25600.

but the size is different for the 100% crops, so not clear how that factors in.

It seems a very close call here, it's almost the same, just a small advantage for the A7 which is remarkable, thanks

I know I won't be able to please everyone. I already clearly described how the test shots were taken. I am not going to match the 100% view. Even dpreview does not do that. So I am afraid my 'help' stops here. Hopefully you will still find them useful.

I use the latest DNG Converter Beta to convert to DNG, then open up in LR5.3

To me, when Sony manages to combine the EVF from the Fuji XT1, the AF from the a6000 and the FF from the a7R, and of course flesh out the lens line up with HIGH quality lenses, then I will be ready to sell my D800e.

Yes it seems a big improvement on the NEX 7's high ISO performance.

I should compare it to the Fuji ct1.

Just for the sake of it, here is the iso 6400 shot developed in RawTherapee with all neutral settings, with only the preset high noise reduction option and +40 contrast:

iso 6400, high noise reduction, +40 contrast

For anybody using this tool (RawTherapee), for the A6000, under the "raw white & black points" label I have set all the black levels to 512. I read somewhere online that 512 was the value for another Sony camera, I think the Nex-7; looks fine to me also for the A6000.

Iso 6400 looks very usable to me, cannot wait to get my A6000...

Adding the pp3 profile I used: pp3

Re: New: Added Fujifilm X-T1 with 56/1.2 for comparison

Looking at the RAW files, the a7R is actually quite a bit cleaner than the a6000, especially in terms of Chroma noise. Not difficult to remove.

The X-T1 ISO6400 RAW looks really impressive.

ISO6400 X-T1 vs a6000

Screen Cap of Lightroom. No adjustments in LR. The entire Details Tab is turned OFF (No Sharpening, No NR)

Fujifilm X-T1 comparison - it ain't the (full) truth :-)

Yes, but you overlooked the fact that ISO6400 for the Fuji is - again - not ISO6400 of the Sonys.

Fuji "cheats" compared to Sony, if you take a look at the exposures for ISO3200 1/250 Sony, 1/160 Fuji XT1; ISO6400 1/500 Sony, 1/320 Fuji, thats about 2/3 of a EV.

So the Fuji runs at about ISO4000 instead of the displayed ISO6400. If you now compare ISO3200 Fuji with Sony ISO6400 (slightly unfair to the Fuji), then the results look very similar.

This is one thing which really turns me off with the Fuji cameras, same thing with the X-E2 which I tested in parallel to my aging Sony 5N, full stop difference at otherwide identical conditions (e.g. f8, ISO400, doubled exposure times with E2).

Since many people do not have the opportunity to directly compare, but instead just see "ISO6400" and marvel how good the picture looks, this seems an effective way to enhance Fujis market opportunities with - in my view - dishonest methods.

No offense meant to you of course, thanks a lot for sharing your experiences here

But possible add another crop comparison of ISO3200 to ISO6400 to show the audience what impact this has.

Another thing to note: The Fuji shots are focussed further back then the Sony.
