100-400 EF first shots of the dog "on the hunt"

Took some shots of the dog to see how my 100-400 was doing with the 6D before testing for any MFA that might be needed.

I was sure there was a bird in the bare grapevine earlier.

Oh well, I guess they flew away.

Well, since you're out here, I'll bark at you.

I like last one - DOF - but does not look sharp to me .

Except for the first shot -- where shutter speed seems unnecessarily high (1/3200) -- your shutter speed is probably too low (1/160, 1/200) to get an accurate measure of sharpness. I probably wouldn't be shooting less than 1/500 in that lighting, possibly more like 1/800 or 1/1000 with an ISO still under 400.  I agree that the images aren't tack-sharp.

You have a gorgeous animal, though, cruff!

They all look soft to me, but dogs are very patient, and they are happy to work with you as long as your want!

One basic rule that always makes animal and baby shots better, is to get a lower point of view -- get down to a level (or raise them up to a level) where you are shooting at (their) eye level.  It is easy to shoot looking down at them, and it seems natural, because that is the normal relationship we have with them, but it (almost) never works.

Good boy! Sit! Smile!

Yeah, I was just futzing around a bit, not paying close enough attention to the shutter speed, but was somewhat interested in what the IS would let me get away with, as I haven't had access to a 100-400 for over a year.  That first shot at 1/3200 was because I still had the ISO set high from some previous indoor test shots.  The telephoto is good because if you get too close to him outside, he wants to start playing chase.  All in all, the focus seems reasonably close to where I was placing it near his eyes.

I own this lens. My rule of thumb....shoot f/8-f/11 and have a shutter speed of at least 1/800sec. at 400mm. With my 7D, I use manual mode and set my ISO on auto. I set my shutter speed and aperture myself......and the camera decides my appropriate ISO.

Can he do this?  Shorter shutter times with lower ISO and still expose right?  I don't think the aperture goes much bigger.  And if it did, it would induce other problems.
