Why do you need to tape pins with the DGX?

I misread and thought you were saying things regarding the whole f/8 and needing to tape pins to prevent the TC from reporting to try and force the camera to AF.

What it boils down to is that almost any new Kenko TC being sold, either Pro or MC4, is reporting so "tape pins apply" if you're at f/8 on a camera that automatically shuts down AF at f/8.

Wow....no wonder this is so confusing. What a mess. Mine has a blue dot. I noticed that it does not work with BIGRON (Tamron 150-600mm) on the 6D. Disappointed there, but the TC was on the market long before this new lens, so don't see a blame here. Not that I intend to use a TC with this 600mm zoom, though.

Not gonna lie - I'm totally going to stick a TC onto the end of a 150-600 once I get a copy.

Hehe...Just make sure you have the right one...it didn't work out too well for me. But if I understand what you're saying, I should try to tape pins? See, my 6D can AF at f/8, but the TC wasn't working with the Kendo 1.4x. I admit I didn't use any tape.

Didn't know the 6D allowed AF at f/8. So no need to tape pins. In a Rebel camera, AF would be automatically disabled if it is told it's at f/8.

And I'm not too concerned about AF, I'm going to order a microprism focusing screen.

I'd like to thank everyone for their input, it certainly gives food for thought.

I think, before I make a decision, I'll try some shooting with the bare lens and see if I need to crop out the centre of any images, and what the results look like.

The ultimate 1.6x Teleconvertor, Canon

If you can afford it you should consider to complement your 6D with a 70D for wildlife and BIF - I did. With the 100-400L there is no way you can get the same IQ from the 6D with a TC as you get from the 70D. You will have some more benefits from that setup:

  • The 70D gives you 1.6x without degrading IQ (at lower ISO)
  • Your 6D / 70-200/f4 is immediately ready for everything else without swapping lens
  • You can enjoy the 70D's superior AF + burst rate especially for BIF
  • Handling the 6D and 70D is very similar (though the 70D is a little bit better) so it easy to switch between them

I have the Kenko C-AF 1.4X Teleplus Pro 300 which auto focuses perfectly fine on both the 6D and the 70D, both with LV and OVF without any taping. But the Kenco 1.4x kills IQ on both the 6D and the 70D so I rarely use it.

I did the "which wine" test with the 100-400L @400mm with all combinations of 6D /70D, no TC / Kenko 1.x, OVF / LV. The 70D without TC gave the best results with no difference between OVF and LV.

My 100-400L rarely leaves the 70D and the 6D is ready for most other things. The 6D and 70D complements each other very nicely as the strength of one of them covers the weakness of the other.

("which wine test": put a wine bottle e.g.50 meters from you and shoot the label. Read as much from the label as you can. Wine labels tends to have several lines with different font sizes.)

Re: 1.4x Teleconvertor, Canon vs Kenko

Hi,

I believe that I know what the DGX-E is designed to do. With the DGX versions certain lens will not function in combination with the Kenko DGX models if you have per lens microfocusadjustment  turned on with the following Canon Cameras 4d3, 1DX, 6d, and 70D. The lenses that won't funcition in that situation include the 100-400L and 300 F4IS L.

I sent my kenko lens into Kenko and after their testing was sent a refund because of that issue. There are work arounds (turn off per lens microfocusadjustment before mounting the lens t-con combination). At the time support told me they didn't have a converter that solved the problem. I suspect the new DGX-E versions are designed to address that issue.

Re: 1.4x Teleconvertor, Canon vs Kenko

Oh! I forgot to mention that I purchased a used Canon 1.4X II that autofocuses with my 70D with the 100-400L provided I tape the correct three pins on the converter to turn off reporting to the camera. It works pretty well on my 100-400L with some subjects but is poor for birds in flight except for large slow birds.

This also something that I am seriously considering.

I still have a couple of EF-S lenses from my previous crop body and I was thinking a 70D body would help me make use of them, as well as giving me the extra reach with the telephoto lenses.
I don't normally do much bird photography, but on the occasions that I do a 70D would be a useful tool for the extra reach, plus I also like the articulating screen for doing macro shots, since one of the EF-S lenses I have is the 60mm Macro and I want to make more use of it.

Decisions, decisions...

Yeah... 6D is not capable of through the viewfinder autofocus at f/8.
