NX corrupting files

Has anyone else had an issue with the NX300 corrupting image and video files on the SD card? It does it randomly, sometimes right away, sometimes after a few days.

I sent the camera off to be repaired 2 weeks ago. They said they couldn't replicate the fault but they replaced the main PCB. Obviously the fault is still there as it just wiped out over 30 raws and jpegs in one go!

Ive contacted samsung yet again and requested a replacement this time but I was wondering if anyone else had had an issue like this?

Its a sandisk SD card by the way so shouldn't bean issue there.

I just returned one Sandisk that was flagged as defective getting to hot.....

have you tried a different card BTW and enforce that issue there as well ?

but else, no...I have two NX300 and one NX20 (and different 14 and 20Mpix MX before) and have never seen that mentioned behavior.

What I have seen is that on write the camera was nmot able to do that once or twice

Yes. Formatting the sd cards in camera before usage helped.

Re: NX corrupting files

I have an older SD card that worked fine in my old nx1000 but wont mount on the computer at all in the nx300 so i assumed the issues were related. Im not sure if that card corrupts files or not tho as i didn't use it for long enough.

I have tried reformatting both SD cards in the camera. Maybe I should try replacing the card.

I haven't seen the issue. Might make sure your card is genuine and definitely try a different card.

Re: NX corrupting files

The card was direct from amazon so it should be genuine.

Ive ordered another SD card to try, you can never have too many after all.

Re: NX corrupting files

I've never had such an issue, your card probably has problems.  I have sometimes had the NX300 claim an issue with a card, but a reboot always fixed that and nothing was ever corrupted.  The only exception is if it was shooting video and the card couldn't keep up with the write speed, in which case only that video I was in the process of shooting would be corrupt.  Even that only happened with slower cards for me (less than class 10 even though some slower class 10 cards might also have issues, the class 10s I do have are a bit faster than the class 10 spec).

Re: NX corrupting files

Yep I have had also this problem.. and today it did it again...

BUT i was able to see my pics on the camerascreen and as soon as I connected my NX300 to my McBook Air the files went corrupted. I even tried on other PC's with a memory card slot.....

And my card works just fine... it is a SD HC Pro class 10 16Gb

I have experienced it also on other memory cards. What is the chance of having more than one corrupted card??!!

Anyone an answer in how to retrieve the corrupted files and make them work again?

Re: NX corrupting files

So pleased to see your post.

My husband bought me this camera in March last year as wedding present. We lost all of our honeymoon photos, first time round we were advised it was unlucky and that the problem was with the memory card. Bought another memory card after having spent £60.00 on the first memory card, it happened again. Bought the camera from Jessops who don't want to know and know taking them to court.

I know its a while ago but can you let me know the outcome of problem.

Many thanks,

Jo

Are you going beyond the card capacity?

Make full format not quick, and try to choose exFAT file format.

Re: NX corrupting files

I am experiencing the same issue with my NX3000, but I think I know when it happens:

So far it only happend when the camera was still storing the RAWs, but I already started fiddling around.

Concrete example: I tested the impact of OIS at normal/short shutter speeds... I used aperture bracketing (3 pics in a row)... and while the camera was still storing the RAWs I entered the menu of the cam to switch between OIS on/off.

When I leave the camera alone while it is storing the pics the corruptions never happened...

Re: NX corrupting files

I have had corruption of .SRW (Raw) files from both my NX1100 and NX3000 during the file transfer process. more often when using the Autobackup feature over Wifi. When I insert the same card into a card reader typically the files are OK.

But rarely have I had the problem if I:

1. Format the card in the CAMERA - not a PC

2. Take the card from the camera directly to a card reader connected to my PC

Copying from the camera via USB or Wifi, or inserting the card into a reader connected to a tablet first have all resulted in corrupted files.

I have lots of different cards and the problems have occurred on all of them.

I can't answer how to recover the files using a Mac. But if you have access to a Windows PC....

http://www.online-tech-tips.com/free-software-downloads/free-photo-recovery-software/

I've used ZAR with great success many times - but the first thing to do (if possible) is to set the card to read only (I know you can't do this with a Micro SD card - but I recommend putting it in one of those SD card holders and set it to read-only). As long as you haven't reformatted it and started reusing it for other purposes you should be able to recover most files from it. Even if reformatted, they can still be recoverred but every time you use it for something else the chances diminish.

Re: NX corrupting files

Think we have to distinguish 2 scenarios:

1) The files on SD-card are OK, but due to a possible transfer issue the transfered files are corrupted (meaning they are binary different from the originals on SD). This is a minor problem, because the 'good' files are still on the SD-card.

2) The files on SD-card are already 'natively corrupted'

I am only talking about 2)... and my theory for the root cause is that those corruptions happen, when the camera was e.g. in continious shooting mode... still storing the files on SD... but you start pushing buttons (e.g. menu botton) while the cam is still storing the files.

Can anybody that had problem 2) remember whether he 'disturbed' the cam while it was still storing the files on sd-card?

Can anybody that had problem 2) remember whether he 'disturbed' the cam while it was still storing the files on sd-card?

2) can also happen when the file system on the SD card wasn't properly unmounted ("ejected" or "safely removed") prior the card being removed from a reader / camera with SD card inside being detached from a computer. Broken FAT ("directory" where the information about files and folders is kept) may lead to portions of existing files being overwritten by newly created ones or other wrong things and result in data loss.

The power switches on NX cameras are soft buttons, thus you shouldn't be able to stop the write by shutting down the camera using them (It may happen, though, if Samsung engineers implemented shutdown procedure in a clumsy way...). Neither your theory about buttons being pressed is plausible, as most of the UI is being blocked when the buffer is full and the data is being written to SD card in background.

The only way to corrupt the data in camera (except the one mentioned earlier) when the SD card is logically and physically healthy (i.e. file system is intact and the card is not failing due to flash memory wear etc.) is software crashing or battery being yanked when filesystem is being written to.

Re: NX corrupting files

@vatazhka

I hear your words, but it contradicts with my practical NX3000 experience:

o as a default, I always use aperture-bracketing (3x continious shoots in a row) und RAW only... under those conditions:

o no corrupted files ever when I don't disturb the camera right after pressing the shutter

o in those ocasions where I knew that right after pressing the shutter I already started fiddling around the camera buttons, in most cases the result was:

picture 1/3 OK, picture 2/3 corrupted, picture 3/3 OK -> The pattern is always like this (only the second picture is corrupted)... I would not know how to explain this pattern by file system corruption.

See attached example of those 'triples', some are OK, some are not, but always the 2nd corrupted...

Example of triples...

NX3000, despite the similarities in UI, is based on a totally different software platform than NX300.

picture 1/3 OK, picture 2/3 corrupted, picture 3/3 OK -> The pattern is always like this (only the second picture is corrupted)... I would not know how to explain this pattern by file system corruption.

This seems to be a reproducible glitch in software, not necessarily one implying issues with writing to SD card.

Are you on the latest firmware version? BTW, I have the NX mini which is based on the same platform as NX3000, but don't shoot using depth bracketing - perhaps that's something which I should be aware of?
