Finally, X-T1 Tracking AF is Figured Out, :-), with XF 60mm

Sorry, I am kind of late to the party here. After two challenging days with X-T1's tracking AF, I finally figured it out, I think.

Well, I though to myself that I should challenge the camera a little bit, so instead of the 55-200mm, I put the XF 60mm that is pretty well known for its 'not so fast' AF.

I tested it on the dog this morning. The settings are:

1. Front AF switch on "C"

2. Shooting mode on either "CH" or "CL"

3. Focus point as much as possible should be in the center (I think my hit rate was higher when I did this)

Here are 10 pictures (SOOC, JPEG). Only the first picture was cropped a little bit since the handler's hand was in the picture (she told me not to include any of her in the pic). And pics were resized to be less than 0.4MB per file.

These pictures were not from one series of bursts but I chose 10 out of about 24 that are quite different in framing and distance (out of 24, I think only 2 or 3 where the dog was not in focus).

For me, the star of the show might not be the tracking but the colors. Love it.

Absolutely! It's not a deal breaker at all for me that Lightroom cannot recognize the RAW files yet. The JPEG is already so good.

I'm pretty sure my iPhone could have tracked that dog.

That's even better, smaller, cheaper, and always with us, yes?

I am pretty sure your iPhone sensor is so small everything will be in focus anyway.

The iPhone certainly can, with everything in focus with the small sensor.

The X-T1 can AF track a fast moving subject better than the previous Fuji X cameras... just not well as the fast dSLRs--performance wise.

I'm finding the success rate of having frames in focus from the X-T1's AF-C is very dependent on the lens being used and the distance to subject.

Re: Sure

I haven't tried extensively but I could see that it's much better than my X-E1. Nice looking dog there!

Re: Sure

Although the dog is not moving particularly fast, but still it is a good effort for the slowest AF lens in the  line up.

Color is amazing.  You got to give credit to the lens as well, not just the camera.

Probably the AF sensors have aperture (different) specific sensitivity. What I mean is that the center point is say sensitive to f2.8 but with a non constant aperture lens like the 55-200 this will not be utilized and may fall back to f5.6. This may explain your findings.

It looks like the X-T1 did an amazing job tracking an old dog walking!

Thanks. I'm sure he'd appreciate it. He's 12 but still like a puppy. Thanks!
