Beautiful LR profile for D800 (included)
22

I have been working a lot with color (and tone) rendition in various RAW converters and I have always been a bit frustrated the LR's rendition.

Since LR is my converter of choice, I have been working on a new calibration technique to create a new profile for the D800 I'd like to share with you.

Intends:

  • Create a standard profile pleasing for most of the photos without any adjustment, one that can create the wow effect without messing with every slider (supposing you have something good at the begining!)
  • Not to create a neutral profile
  • Sublte colors, wild when needed (I have always found that Camera raw is too dull or too saturated with no subtlelty)
  • Filmic tone curve with gentle highlights rolloff and enough contrast as a standard profile
  • Get closer to what some people call the CCD rendition
  • Get a profile that make me use it all the time and forget about the Camera Calibration panel

What I got at the moment:

  • A pretty good tone curve, contrasty enough not to fiddle with the tone for every image, and which can take contrast adjustments without getting too bright or blocked in the shadows
  • Subtle colors, yeah! With good skin tones. Saturated colors stay saturated.
  • No more slight magenta cast of Adobe Standard or green cast of Camera Standard
  • For now, a quite neutral color rendition without creative shifts
  • This a a daylight profile not yet tested for incandescant light

You may download the preliminary profile here: RTH Standard v4 beta

Please let me know what you think about it!

Thanks, bookmarked. I like the concepts behind it, I'll check it when I try LR (which I'm going to do soon).

Unfortunately, it doesn't work with a D800E so I can't try it.

How do I use this profile?

I'm new to LR5, how do I import this calibration profile?

D800E profile (included)

Here we go : link

Note that this one is not fully calibrated from a D800E. It is the D800 made enabled for the D800E (which should not be far away).

You have just to copy the dcp profile into one of the following folders:

Windows—C: \ Users \ [your username] \ AppData \ Roaming \ Adobe \ CameraRaw \ CameraProfiles \
Mac—Macintosh HD / Users / [your username] / Library / Application Support / Adobe / CameraRaw / CameraProfiles /

Thank you for sharing! It's excellent, high contrast and low saturation. I've also been disappointed with Adobe's color profiles.

Yes, please. Let's have more profiles posted - by knowledgeable/experienced users hopefully

Requesting D800E and D4.

Thanks. I like what it does with skin tones, but I'm not fond of what it does with blue skies. So, I wouldn't use it as a general purpose profile.

Can you be more specific about blue skies?

What is the location for os x?

I tried dropping it into:

Library > Application Support > Adobe > Camera Raw > Camera Profiles > Camera > Nikon D800...

Didn't seem to work. Any help appreciated.

A bit washed out. The blue has gone a bit gray and contrast with clouds has dropped when compared to a profile I created with a QPcard 203 book and QPcalibration software.

D800E, 24-70mm lens.

I like it. Thx for sharing. Appears to work great on skin tones.

Thanks for the effort

it is appreciated.

However, I don´t like the rendered output. Not with my files, on my monitor.
For me contrast is way too high, and some colours are off. E.g blue skies get a weird tone, as does some red objects. I have only tried daytime outdoor sunny summer shot, the one I ususally use for testing purposes.

If one likes contrasty and punchy images "out of the box" I´d rather recommend Nikons D2x v.4 profiles.
