Started off with the D70 way back when. Then went to the D90 and D7000. Got bored and tired of carrying stuff around when hiking or traveling and went for the X100S to mix things up. At first it was fun but after the honeymoon phase wore off, it felt restricting. So here I am trying m4/3. First with the E-M1, but felt it was trying to be a DSLR but wasn't quite there. When the E-M10 came out, I thought I would test it out too. I'm having a hard time getting over the poorer quality files (in my workflow), but it's such a breeze to carry and use. I can certainly see what some people mean when they say m4/3 is "good enough". On one hand, I have the shot because I brought my camera, but on the other, I sometimes feel like I could use a better output.

It's marketed as a basic "tweener" camera for people trying to reach out of the prosumer compact camera base, but it's definitely a full featured body. Ended up with the oly 25mm, oly 9-18mm and pana 100-300mm. The zoom isn't the greatest, but the reach makes it pretty fun. Took the whole kit to the zoo and it was pretty easy to carry and use. Still waiting on the oly 9mm bodycap, the oly 14-42 EZ, and the oly macro filter.

The X-T1 is very enticing, but the size and cost of the lenses starts putting me back in APS-C DSLR territory.

Will be slowly putting up photos from the smaller/lighter/"good enough" kit soon.

Wow, I like this lens and your shot.  300mm comes in handy with animals with sharp teeth.  I admire your steadiness.  Is it me or does this one look hungry?

Great shot. It has a real sense of movement and also is quite threatening. How did you get away? Or was it going backwards?

In what way are the files of poorer quality? Is is just size?

I don't know...you did a great job and I like this photo a lot, because of the subject and the content. I don't think I'll like it any better if you had shot it with the best sensor with twice as much resolution, dynamic range, etc, etc.

Thanks! With the IBIS, it's pretty easy to get good handheld shots.  I rested the fully extended lens on a barrier for this though.  Even then, I wish I got the shutter speed higher for more crispness.  I already had to push the ISO up to 640 which added a lot of noise.

Thanks! It was chasing a little toy on a string. At full lens extension, I was kneeling behind a barrier at about 50m away.

Lot more noise and artifacts when compared to larger format sensors.

Thanks!  I agree here which is why I'm starting to feel that "a shot in the hand is worth two in..."

I will pick a few and see how they look when printed big. I like to make stitched panoramas.

Compared to what is the quality of the files poorer? X100s or E-M1? I compared the output of my GM1 with some files I shot with a X100, D5100, and X100s. I was amazed how well the GM1 holds up. No reason for me to move back to aps-c. Anyway, I'm interested to hear more about this as I'm in the market for a second m4/3 body. My wife likes the GM1 so much that I hardly get a chance to play with it myself.

Compared to the D7000 and X100S.  Even though the X100S files were beautiful, I noticed a lot of blotchy artifacts on flat colored areas.  Very detailed landscapes had a lot of detail blur.  So even the X100S' X-trans wasn't perfect.  However, I still notice noise and artifacts earlier and in greater magnitude with Oly m4/3 than my more recent cameras.  Just part of the system.  Nothing is perfect I've found.  Been waiting since 2001 for perfection.

What RAW processor did you use?  For my GX7, Apple Aperture always messes up details where there's fine hair structure, while Lightroom and Silkypix don't.  Reducing noise reduction may give you better details.  The interesting thing is, if GX7 files are marked as GH3, all the details are preserved.

If anyone ever was wondering if m43 could keep up with a baby this should put you at ease.

Thanks! Ha! Only thing was I didn't use continuous focus. I pre focused and switched to MF. However, the E-M10 subjectively focuses faster than any camera I've owned, including the D7000 and X100S as more recent bodies.

Re: New E-M10: Obligatory cat shot

I completely agree that many people feel it's an in between segment. I also respect your opinion in regards to what you think of it compared to other systems, but i personally feel it's underestimated. I have had a few cameras in recent years, including a very awesome and respected K5-IIs. For whatever reason, i get better results out of my GX7.

This could of course be due to me just getting better with photography, but those two camera's owning periods are only about 6 months apart so i don't think that's why. Maybe i have better lenses with MFT than i had with my other systems (ive never been one to buy $1500 glass), as MFT has very good "cheap" glass. Whatever the reason, i see fantastic results, technically. Content wise, i also find it's easier to shoot. I can be totally silent and get shots i could never get with a DSLR, and it's more agile. I don't think there is any DSLR i would want that happens to be as manageable as my GX7 with 20mm pancake.

IMO a DSLR is still good for motion tracking, but if that isn't on the menu then i see no gain in IQ other than perhaps ISO performance if the sensor sizes are different. If that's what you mean when you mention your output, larger sensors may have a small edge there, but then again, I shoot all my lenses wide open all the time and get incredibly sharp results. IMO it's a give and take. I can get sharper wide open lens IQ with more noise. After some NR, it all evens out.

Either way enjoy your gear, happy shooting.

I'm surprised that you are finding a lot more noise at 640. Most reviews I've seen, with sample images that confirm it, at least to me, show that most m4/3 sensors aren't really significantly noisier at his level. Higher ISO's, sure.

Thanks!  Still really liking the E-M10, even after taking it to Peru and Ecuador!
