I broke my 22mm lens!

Re: I broke my 22mm lens!

You should have taken more step-by-step photos and then sold the rights to one of the many 'break down' web sites, help pay for replacement !!

Next time try superglue on tip of a straight pin - no kidding, and use 2 hands to steady your expected nervousness when applying - we have all been there!

Good Luck!

Actually I did take more step-by-step photos; I'm happy to post them here assuming folks are interested.  I just didn't know if this audience would care to see all of the pictures hence I just chose 3.

And the superglue accident was getting some of the glue on my fingers as I was holding the lens assembly waiting for the glue to dry.  As careful as I thought I was being, that finger brushed one of the lenses and rubbed glue over it.

BTW, do you think the lens that broke was the the second from left (refer to lens component break down for 22mm) ?

Right side is camera side, left is object side.

Just curious.

I don't know what the lens component break down is but if the camera is on the right and the lens is pointing left, I do believe that the lens piece that fell loose would be the second from the left.

Could you help me with your photo log of disassemblement of this lens? That would be helpful, because I tried, but once all is plastic I can't to go further. I hope you still have this photos.

Unfortunately the loose piece required the entire lens to be taken apart down to its core; some of that I had to do with brute force. Being realistic, there was practically zero chance that I could reassemble everything in reverse order. Here's the loose lens piece and another random loose part that I have no idea where it came from.

Offending loose lens piece and another mystery loose part.

Hi waterchange

I know this is an old post but today I had the same problem (my ef-m 22mm fell from the bedside table on a carpet) and tried to fix it. I didn't use force or glue. I hadn't even seen your post until I finished the job. Now it seems it works though I have two extra pieces. One is the little rhomboid in your picture. The other is a metal rod of about 1 cm. In one of your other picture you can see a longer one. I think that the two fit together and some other day I will try to find their place.

In the meanwhile if you have kept the pictures from 8 years ago they might help in figuring out the puzzIe

At this point, I start to reassemble knowing that the lens would never work again because of an accident with superglue and way too many tiny parts that I took apart. After awhile, I chucked everything in the garbage can and decided that I'll just have to spend another $100 for a replacement 22mm lens.

sympathies, I’ve been there, I had a Sonos 5 speaker that started hissing, out of warranty and sonos wouldn’t repair it just offering me a discount on a new one. I thought it was a capacitor on the power supply, and after disassembly It looked like it, but my hopes of getting it back together again were nil. I’m no longer a Sonos customer and happy with an alternative but in your case I’d still get a new 22 😀

Dropped my 22mm + eos m about a week ago, from about one and a half meter down on to rock hard concrete. The camera casing got a bit skewed so I had to take it apart and bend the casing back to it's normal shape. The 22mm got a dent on the focus ring so now it has some friction when manual focusing.

Except the dent on the focus ring everything works as normal, no damage on the inside of the lens. My copy probably was better glued together, or else it shouldn't have been able to survive that fall.

I too dropped a 22mm f2 while changing lenses. it fell 3.5 feet onto a hard concrete walkway. Except for a ding, it was undamaged optically or mechanically, although I was prepared for the worst as it was a pretty hard fall.

I had an EF-M 15-45 kit lens that obviously had been dropped as the bottom of the front filter ring had a crack in it, but it could still mount filters with a little persuasion. The lens optically was slightly decentered, but this is fairly normal for that lens.

Today I use a lens hood on all lenses except the kit 15-45 and the 22mm f2, either in the standard or the 'storage' position, which provides extra protection if accidentally dropped, and also protection while in the camera bag.

For the EF-M 15-45 kits lens I leave a 49mm to 55mm step up ring on most of the time, and for the 22mm f2 and 32mm f1.4 lenses I leave a 43mm to 55mm step up ring on at all times, which may provide extra protection against dings on the lens' filter ring. I bought set of pinch 55mm lens caps, now it's easy to use a single set of 55mm filters on any lens quickly as needed. Luckily the 32mm f1.4 lens hood will mount right over a 55mm step up ring.

The Sigma 56mm f1.4, Canon EF-M 18-150, and Canon EF-M 11-22 are all 55mm filter thread, so 55mm seems like a good 'standard' filter size. The EF-M 55-200 is 52mm filter size and needs a step-up ring to get to 55mm, but unfortunately its lens hood does not fit over a 52-55mm step up ring so I usually leave the ring off, unless using a filter.

I don't like your chances

The OP hasn't posted on DPR since this thread was active 8 years ago, but you might get lucky.

Re: I broke my 22mm lens!

I have two broken copies of this lens with the same issue. Seems like the cement wasn't strong enough to hold that group in place and there's nothing else to retain it. In one lens it was jarred loose directly by a drop and the other finally gave out suddenly after years of use. Thinking about disassembling to try to superglue it back in place. At least I've got another copy for reference if I get stuck on re-assembly.
