upgrading...

hi

i know i should buy a prime lens and so on... but im debating if i should just get an e-pm2. im the owner of an e-pm1. Im pretty happy with it, I like the size and got used with the menus and so on but i left it drop and the lens (14-42) is being hold by tape and so on (the body is ok). my question is: should i get an e-pm2 or should i try a different system (sony nex?) since i did not really invest in the micro 4/3? Is the upgrade worth? Should i just keep the tape in place and keep it until a new generation (i have a lx7 too but i barely use it cause i have more fun with the epm1)? thanks a lot!

At the least, you could pick up a used kit lens to pair with the (undamaged?) E-PM1 and sell it. You could try to sell without a lens, but I doubt you'd have much luck with that.

If you were happy with the camera prior to the drop, you could also buy a better used lens instead of spending more money on a new body. For example, a fast pancake prime like the Panasonic 20mm/1.7 could be a good fit for the E-PM1, depending on your preferences. Buying better lenses makes changing to a new body (in the same mount) more affordable. Taking the lenses I used with my E-PL1 to an E-M1 made the expense more bearable.

The E-PM2 would move you to the Olympus 16mp sensor family, along with other improvements. Compare the reviews and see if the cost is justified.

OTOH, this would be a good time to go to a different mount if you've decided that MFT isn't for you. Go to a camera shop and give other options a try. The shop may give you trade-in credit toward a new purchase, too.

Should you switch systems is a question only you can answer. If you are still happy with the EPM1, get a new lens for it, get the new kit lens, or the 17MM f2.8, both are very cheap. Or get the 45MM f1.8 now while it is on sale for $350.

I think you are better off waiting for the EPM3, or some other next gen Olympus camera. EPM2 is a good jump from what you have, but we are going on a 2 years since the 16MP sensor came out in the OMD EM5. I am sure a new sensor is on the way.

But anyway, lenses can last forever, if you get the 45MM f1.8 you will most likely keep it for 10+ years, and 4+ new camera bodies.

I say stay with MFT, but that is what I use and prefer. The EPM1 and its 12MP sensor has a nice character to it, I would keep it even in the future it will be fun to pull the old camera out and shoot some pics with it.
