XT-1 Focus Peaking?

I am very intrigued by the XT-1.  Seems like a REALLY nice new body.  The dials look just right and not pointless like the Df, it has a reasonable price, a great sensor, and a super fast centered loupe evf.  This is pretty much everything I've wanted in a mirror less.  But how is manual focus.  I see it has a zoom feature, which is very nice.  But what about full frame focus peaking.  That is what I REALLY want in a loupe EVF!  How well does it work?  I've used focus peaking on an external EVF and it made pulling focus, even on the edge of frame a breeze.

Re: XT-1 Focus Peaking?

Focus peaking works on the whole frame, not only from the small window in the dual mode in EVF.

That's fantastic.  I can't wait to see some demos of this feature.

Oh yeah, one more question.  Is it a digital shutter system or cloth?

I thought it was Samurai Sword, but I could be wrong. Cloth, I think, it goes "click".

While a samurai sword would be bad ass. I would prefer cloth...lol...I just can't do the digital click.  Seems so toy like.

Oh, VERY nice.  That's exactly what I was hoping to see!  Can you change the color?  I personally used red last time I used an EVF.  But sometimes something like green is good since it's the opposite of people.

Re: XT-1 Focus Peaking?

You should see "The Camera Store" review on the X-T1. The reviewer comments that the peaking effect--even set to low--is cruder than it is on Sony, making it not feel as precise to use.

Personally, I'm bummed that Yellow isn't a peeking color choice on the Fuji, since I find it the easiest to read. (I also tend to use a B&W mode for viewing to make peaking even more obvious.)

I just watched the Camera Store review and they didn't compare Fuji's and Sony's focus peaking. Maybe you were thinking of a different review?

Could be. Watched too many reviews!

I hope it isn't too big a difference. I'll find out for myself mid-march with a rental, hopefully.

Re: XT-1 Focus Peaking?

Did you try the blue?

With Sony the available colors [red, yellow] are too often naturally occurring, something like the cyan you can use in Photoshop for guides to me would seem much better

So strange to not have green.  But, blue would work too...it's an unnatural color and opposite of skin.

Re: XT-1 Focus Peaking?

I use yellow a lot with my A7r. I just tried red and it seems fine as well. Blue perhaps for portraits as pointed out for a contrast against skin.

Yellow stands out in all situations - not sure what situation the other poster is referring to. At least not with Sony's implementation.

One minor issue with the Sony system is if set to high it can light up perhaps a bit too much of the scene (although critical focus areas are a deeper colour) and in a magnified view it becomes a bit weak.

The split view sounds very good though. How would you rate the manual focusing ability so far under different circumstances - a fast lens wide open, stopped down, a long lens?

Greg.

Re: XT-1 Focus Peaking?

Based on my play with the various levels and colors, getting accurate MF, even at shallow DOF, is straight forward.

I had great success with the PIP mode, and the full screen mode, with and without magnification.

The edges show up very clearly, and I could rack back and forth at f/1.4 and see the plane of focus move smoothly through the target.

I found a good X-T1 demo video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uq5h132vVxQ

Re: XT-1 Focus Peaking?

Thanks very much Chris. That does look like it works very well.

The PIP feauture is a big plus for me as one of the things I REALLY like about the Sony Nex 6 and A7r has been the focus peaking implementation. I have shot XE1 and Nex 6 side by side, same lenses and the Sony could be focused in 1-2 secs but the XE1 before focus peaking took ages and magnified view was hard sometimes when stopped down - way less snap to focus so critical focus was harder to pick.

I think it was just a passing remark when he was talking about the focus peaking and colour choice.
