Re: G16 question/advice

Thanks for the two replies above.  I ordered the G15 this weekend for $299 from B&H (with a free 16GB card).  I figure that's a great price and B&H is a good store with a good return policy--if I don't feel it's good enough I can upgrade from there.  Really looking forward to having something I can take along with me everywhere this spring and summer.

Ah, so it was you that bought that G15.

I'd love to hear from anyone who has had the G16 (or 15 even) and the G1X.

I can read the specs but in real world usage, what are the main differences and/or strengths and weakness of each?  The bigger sensor sounds great. Bigger price tag, not so much.

I look at the G16 as a tried and true concept for what it is. After all I've read I still feel it's a great upgrade to my G11 and fit for my needs.

Is the G16 a great camera for what it is? Do I need to wake up and smell the coffee because the G series is stale and dated?

Any and all feedback is welcome. Please keep in mind that part of the attraction to the G16 is the price tag. Thanks, Keith

Ken, there is only one way for you to answer this question. Buy the G16 with option to return it if it does not meet your expectations. If it does, keep it and sell your G11 to help pay for it. If it does not meet your expectations, return it, simple as that, nothing lost. I have a G12 that I can't wait to upgrade, but I'm going to get either the G1X MkII or Nikon P8000. The reason is because I have determined the old, tiny pinhead 1/1.7" sensors simply can NOT satisfy my IQ requirements. If you are able to handle the inadequacies of such small sensors, high noise at anything above 400 ISO, and are in a real hurry, check out the G16. If you are ready and able to take photography to the next step, wait 2-3 months and get a better/larger sensor camera, pay a bit more for much higher IQ, your choice. To me, 1/1.7" sensors (and smaller) are OK for camera phones, but not high end fixed lens, top of the line cameras! Sony and their RX100/10, Canons G1X MkII, and Nikon P8000 has made that perfectly clear, to me anyway.

Have G16 for more than a month and sold G15. G16 is total different camera than G15: AF speed really fast (jpg) and Digic 6 processor are much powerful than G15--(G1X MarkII will use Digic 6).

Re: G16 question/advice

I agree that small sensor cameras certainly have their limitations, and I have also moved to using my EOS M with its APS-C sensor most of the time. I did, however, just purchase a G16 that I got at a decent price. I have always been a fan of the G-series cameras and loved the G15 I had last year before selling it to fund other gear purchases. I really missed the camera once I sold it though because even though it had a small sensor, relative to the one in my M, it still produced pictures and subsequently prints that I was very satisfied with. That, plus the price, fueled my decision to purchase the G16, and I must say that I am very, very pleased with the camera and am quite excited about using it. With its fast lens and useful zoom range, not to mention the benefits of the Digic 6 processor, the G16 is a wonderful photographic tool. I am interested in the G1 X MkII, but my wallet is not, so for now I'm thoroughly enjoying shooting my EOS M and G16 side by side.

I ended up returning the G15.  It's not fair, but compared to my T2i, the pics were just not acceptable to me.  I used it in late afternoon in my house, and it kept cranking the ISO too high in not what I would call low light.

Plus, it was bigger than I was hoping.  I ordered an S110 someone posted a link to for $159.  I figure if I'm going to have the tradeoff of IQ for something smaller, I should go with SMALLER and truly pocketable.  Plus the wider 24mm will come in handy for travel.

I was really lusting after that G15 (or G16 for that matter) and wanted to find a way to return my Elph 330hs which is actually very good for a p/s at that low price point.......and put in some extra cash for a used G15.

However, I ended up getting a great deal on an open box Sony Nex 3nl and even though it's not all that pocketable (coat pocket yet, pants, not really)..........it's absolutely amazing and I never feel that my images are a compromise for when I don't want to drag out my dslr and lenses.
