Poll: Your travel photo lens kit
1

What lenses do you usually walk around with for travel photography when you go to a city or town?

I didn't include an ultrawide zoom (7-14 or 9-18) to keep the poll manageable.

Re: Poll: Your travel photo lens kit

Other.

My kit varies a lot.

Hiking - E-M1 or E-M5, 75-300, 12-50 or 12-40, and either 75mm, 60mm macro or 8mm FE (Usually 60mm macro) and FL300R.

General wandering - E-M1, 75-300, 12-40, 75mm, 60mm Macro, FL300R

Lightweight - E-M1, 12-40 & 75mm.

Or, obviously, any variant of the above.

You didn't include an ultrawide zoom, but the 7-14 is the lens i use along with the 45mm f2.8 Pana.

In the past my travel kit has been:

- Oly 14-150 zoom

- Panny 20mm 1.7

Next big trip, I might also consider taking the kit 14-42 + the WCON wide adapter, because the resulting 11mm wide is the widest lens I have in my current kit. I might also haul along the Oly 45mm 1.8 because it's pretty darned small.

Re: Poll: Your travel photo lens kit

I bring the following kit but usage of the lenses vary.

For most trips, I bring the oly 12-40, voigt 17.5mm, pana 25mm and the oly 75mm.

The 12-40 gets use the most. Followed by the 25mm.

Interesting subject for a Poll

I typically take 2 zooms (sometimes even 3 with the 7-14) and 3 primes on a trip of more than one day, but I don't always carry everything.  Sometimes it is the camera with one zoom and the other in my hip bag.  Sometimes it is the camera with one prime (at night).

Re: Poll: Your travel photo lens kit

It depends, I have many different 'kits', and just added to it.  Lets see over the years I have used:

  • Single superzoom/bridge camera (Olympus C-2100UZ)
  • Cell phone with camera (Samsung S-II)
  • Pocket camera (Olympus Stylus1 or TG-2, previously Olympus VG-120)
  • Olympus weather sealed DSLR (E-5 now, E-1/E-3 before) with 14-54mm lens
  • E-5 with 14-54mm, E-3 with 50-200mm + EC-14 lens (or swapping bodies, depending on which I expect to shoot with the most)
  • Pen (E-PM2 previously E-P2) with short zoom (14-42mm) + prime (Panasonic 20mm)
  • Pen with long zoom (14-150mm) + prime (Panasonic 20mm) + FL-36 flash, possibly with the 14-42mm thrown in the bag

Each has plus sides and minus sides.  I really wish for instance the Stylus1 or the 14-150mm lens were weather sealed.  It would simplify picking the travel camera to have a long zoom range, but still be weather sealed.

Three zooms 7mm-100mm

MFT gear is so small and light, I can easily carry a GX7 and 7-14, 12-35 & 35-100 zooms, a Vivitar DF-183 or Metz 28 CS-2 flash, and a couple of extra batteries all day in a small Tamrac Rally 4 shoulder bag. I have 20mm & 45mm primes and a G6 but use them primarily on low-light jobs.

Re: Poll: Your travel photo lens kit

I voted for 2 primes, but that is my 'casual' set for when I am doing all kinds of things, and photography isn't the main goal. When I go out to take photo's I usually carry a bigger bag with 4 primes and a telezoom (7,5, 12, 19, 45 and 75-300). That bag is still smaller and lighter then my 2 zoom Nikon DSLR set (16-85 and 70-300).

Re: Poll: Your travel photo lens kit

You should add a category: Ultra-Wide Zoom and Superzoom

A GX7 with Oly 9-18 and Lumix 14-140 II is my basic travel kit for m4/3. For me, the 9-18 beats a 7-14 for travel because it is smaller, lighter and has a range that makes it a very good walk-around lens.

I'll add the Lumix 100-300 if I expect to be using it for wildlife. I carry a Lumix FZ200 (25-600mm equivalent, constant f2.8) for back-up.

If I have to travel really light I'll take two pocket cameras, one with 24mm f2.0 equivalent on the wide end, the other 25-400 equivalent. They are surprisingly good for travel photos that will not be made into very large prints.

Depends on the trip

If it is including things that I feel I would need a longer lens, then probably the two zooms and a faster prime for indoors/nighttime.

If I don't really think there will be a lot of use of the longer lens (and most of my trips that is the case - 10% of less of the shots use longer focal lengths), then probably just a short zoom and a fast/small prime for indoors/nighttime.

RX100

My "Other" is a Sony RX100!  I bought the  GX7, kit lens, Lumix 100-300 and tripod to be my "big camera" kit for photo expeditions, not tourist trips.

from 21mm to 300mm in a very light kit

My kit is:

Panasonic 14 f2.5 with the Wide Converter lens which makes it 21mm equivalent

Olympus 45 f1.8

Olympus 40-150 f4-f5.6

This is my standard kit for my OM-D E-M5, and it takes very little space (beside this I have the Pana 25 f1.4, but I use it for only special occasions). Convenient, and covers a lot. The default lens on the body is the pana 14 f2.5 beacuse of its size. I am thinking of replacing it with the 12.32 Pana zoom (or maybe the Oly pancake zoom), but I don't feel it urgent

Why not include long zoom? (That's often what I use).

12-40/2.8 and 45-150mm

Seems to be all I need at the moment, most with 12-40mm only a little with 45-150mm.

E-PL5, 12-40, 45-150.

agreed; gots to have the trinity

The main reason I went m43 was so I could carry a few lenses. I'm packing the 7-14, 12-35 and 35-100 at minimum. And generally the PL25. The new Oly 25/1.8 looks like it would fit into the bag a bit easier...

Re: Poll: Your travel photo lens kit

vacation: e-p5 + oly 14-150

all other outings : e-p5 and oly 17/1.8

use to have many lens but too distractive..

so, found that rule of 2 : one prime + one zoom e.g. lens diet helps to master myself in my photo play rather then to be lens  geek
