Canon T3i (600D) at 240dpi?

hi all, i'm entering a photo contest and one of the requirements is that the picture has to be 300dpi.  I use a Canon T3i (600D) and i'm pretty sure i have the resolution up at the highest and shoot at RAW+jpg.   my pictures seem to be at 240dpi.   can this camera go higher?

Hi,

you have to change it in Photoshop in image size.

DPI is meaningless unless you are going to print?

Are there other requirements? Size, etc??

How did you determine that your images are 240 dpi? From the exif data?

Here are some links in understanding dpi and resolution.

if the picture is one of the ones selected, it will appear in a small calendar.  there are other requirements which I have.  it also said the picture needs to be 300dpi so it looks good at 5x7".  i know 240dpi is more than enough for that, but I just don't want to get disqualified just cause of this dumb number.    I got the 240dpi by right clicking on the image file->properties->details.  as luck should have it though, the picture I might submit actually has 350dpi.  not sure why that picture is at 350 and all the rest are at 240.   can I do something to a 240dpi picture so it can be 300dpi?

That makes more sense. dpi only has meaning in relation to physcial dimensions.

At 300 dpi for a 5x7 image you need a final resolution of 1500x2100 (5x300 and 7x300). So if the 300 dpi, 5x7 is a hard requirement, this means you need to crop the image so that it has a 5x7 (or 7x5 depending on orientation) aspect ratio and perhaps also downsize so it's at 1500x2100 resolution if your are working from an image of higher resolution. To finish it off, change the dpi to 300. At this point, this is kind of meaningless, but since they require it you should do.

Hope you are starting to get the picture, pun intended!

If they are minimum requirements than higher resolutions with higher dpi would be OK.

Re: Canon T3i (600D) at 240dpi?

isn't the dpi independant of resolution?  dpi stands for dots per inch right and resolution is just the dimensions of the image in terms of pixels.  if I crop the picture, that only changes the resolution, but the dpi would still be the same wouldn't it?  I checked some of my shots that I know i cropped and it still shows as 240dpi.

Not jpeg, but you can change it to 300 Dpi in photoshop for a TIFF files. Anyway they certainly don't want a RAW files for the submission anyway.

My Stock photo agency also requires 300 dpi TIFF files for the High resolution files they sell to clients and i change it in photoshop.

Yes, but if they want a image that can be printed at 300 dpi on a 5"x7" print it means you need a resolution of 1500x2100.

If you took the same 1500 x 2100 pixel mage and didn't mind printing at 150 dpi you could print a photo that is 10"x14", but it would not be photo quality.  300 dpi is considered photo quality.

dpi stands for dots per inch right and resolution is just the dimensions of the image in terms of pixels. if I crop the picture, that only changes the resolution, but the dpi would still be the same wouldn't it? I checked some of my shots that I know i cropped and it still shows as 240dpi.

Re: Canon T3i (600D) at 240dpi?

ok i opened up the RAW file in PHotoshop and i see how to change it.  I can enter whatever I want I think. for this contest i'd have to enter 300dpi, but at what point does it become overkill?  and right now the depth is set to 8bits/channel.  should I change that to 16bits/channel to get better quality?

All messed up and confused
1

Resolution is confusing and contest owners are among those people who don't have any idea what they are up to.

Here's what matters.

They want a picture that when printed to 5 x 7 inches uses 300 pixels for each inch of length and width.

300 x 5 is 1500 pixels

300 x 7 is 2100 pixels

So you can use the sizing capabilities of your software to re-size your shot so it is 1500 pixels wide, across the part you want to turn out to be 5 inches on the final printed piece.

The 7 inch piece will automatically turn into 7 x 300 = 2100 pixels.

DPI is a term based on printing on a printing press. It means dots per inch.

PPI is a term used in digital printing. It means pixels per inch.

When files are prepared for printing, lots of things happen to them electronically.

And the people who want the files are often clueless.

If they want to rint an 8 x10, they'll want a file 2400 x 3000 pixels, except 240 ppi would work fine too. Partly it depends on the press, or the desktop printer.

Re: Canon T3i (600D) at 240dpi?

Do Not change the pixel dimensions of your finished photograph.

Simply change the PPI to 300 (without resampling).  You will notice that the size of your photo will change, however you won't be changing the photo itself in any way.

Submit as an 8-bit sRGB JPEG.

Good luck!
